Iowa wrestlers top Minnesota on tie-breaker
Minnesota Sports-- The No. 3 ranked University of Iowa wrestling team edged No. 4 Minnesota only on criteria basis Saturday at Williams Arena.
MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 3 ranked University of Iowa wrestling team edged No. 4 Minnesota only on a criteria basis Saturday at Williams Arena.
Before a crowd of over 8,000 the Hawkeyes and Gophers wrestled to a 15-15 tie but Iowa was awarded the tie-breaker based on the number of points scored in the dual meet, 41-33.
Iowa took the early lead at 12-3 winning four out of the first five matches. The lone win for the U was at Dylan Ness at 149 pounds with a8-2 decision over Mike Kelly. The Hawkeyes led 15-3 before the Golden Gophers won the last four matches in a row. Logan Storley, Kevin Steinhaus, Scott Schiller and Tony Nelson all won their matches at 174, 184, 197 and heavyweight respectively to tie the meet score.
Minnesota head coach J Robinson sat out the meet still recovering from knee surgery. Assistant coach Brandon Eggum filled in as interim head coach for the meet.
Minnesota drops to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in Big Ten duals. Iowa is 15-1 overall and unbeaten in Big Ten dual meets at 5-0.
