For the first blood drive of 2013 in Ellsworth, 90 appointments had been scheduled, but several people had to cancel because of flu and colds, travel or job schedules.

Scheduled appointments were then down to 73 and organizers were worried the drive wouldn’t be successful, as the goal had been set at 100 donations. However, 41 walk-ins came as potential donors and donations totaled 107.

This great increase caused some delays and some donors had to wait almost an hour before being seen by a technician. Appreciation goes to all the donors for their patience. All of this made for a very successful drive.

Seven donors were recognized for their gallon(s) donations. They were: Dalton Traynor, one gallon; Kristin Meier, two gallons; Patrick Hines Sr., three gallons; Nanette Fox and Pat Dodge, five gallons; Rose Mickelson, eight gallons; and donating the most, Lorin Bloomstrand with nine gallons.

The drive wouldn’t be possible if were not for the volunteers who help in the kitchen, register and record the donors, control the traffic and serve the donors after they have given blood. Those to be commended for donations to the drive are: Pierce County Herald for the stories it ran, Nilssen’s Foods, Viking Coca-Cola, Ellsworth Creamery, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ for refreshments, Zion Covenant Church for use of space and village maintenance for setting up Zion’s Hall.

The next drives in Ellsworth are scheduled at the high school on Wednesday, March 20, from 8 a.m. until 2:45 p.m., and at Zion Covenant Church on Monday, May 13, from noon until 5:45 p.m. To make an appointment at the high school, call (715) 273-3911. For Zion, call Pam at 715-273-0310.
