The duo has landed a nomination for best children’s album for “Can You Canoe?” according to information shared by Rita Stern of River Falls. Stern thought people who attended their local library show might like to know of the honor and watch the Grammys ceremony, to be broadcast live Sunday, Feb. 10, on CBS-TV (in this area, WCCO-TV, channel 4, Twin Cities, or WKBT-TV, channel 8, La Crosse).
The Minneapolis bluegrass pair specializes in kids’ music. Joe Mailander, 27, and Justin Lansing, 28, are childhood buddies from Denver who moved to the Cities in 2008. They canoed down the Mississippi River and wrote an album about it.
The library arranged for them to perform in Ellsworth after obtaining funding from Allina Health’s Neighborhood Health Connections. The library had long sponsored outdoor summer entertainment in the afternoons, but wanted to reach out to more adults, proposing similar evening outings. That proposal met with encouragement from an Allina official at its affiliated River Falls Area Hospital, so an application was submitted and a $1,500 grant was ultimately awarded (enough to cover two evening entertainments—the other was “Colleen and Uncle Squaty”).
