Cold air come through Upper Midwest after much of Wisconsin blanketed with snow

Some of the coldest air of the season is moving into Upper Midwest today and tonight. Wind chill warnings and advisories are posted for much of Wisconsin and Minnesota through Friday morning.

National Weather Service forecaster Tony Zaleski says most locations in Minnesota won't make it above zero today, with wind chills 20-below east to 35-below across the western sections of the state. Zaleski says temperatures overnight will fall to 15-below zero in southern Minnesota and 25-below zero up north.

It's 45 degrees colder in Milwaukee this morning than it was on Tuesday, when folks were golfing in 60-degree sunshine. Wisconsin’s largest city has had rain, ice, and snow since then – and at six this morning, it was 15 degrees with a wind-chill of minus-one. Forecasters said it would be colder after yesterday’s snowstorm that dumped up to nine-and-a-half inches in south-central Wisconsin. But it’s a bit warmer than the zero that was forecast statewide. Madison, Green Bay, and Rhinelander all set new temperature records for yesterday before snow and cold came in.

Six o’clock temperatures were generally in the single-digits above in the northern half of the state, and the teens in the southern half. Air temperatures ranged from one-above at New Richmond to 16 in Kenosha. But it’s supposed to get a lot colder tonight, as a final bout of light snow moves out and Arctic air settles in. Lows of eight-below to 17-below are predicted throughout Wisconsin – and it’s not supposed to get too much above zero tomorrow. Green Bay had the most with 8.2 inches, and all three cities broke old marks set in the 1930’s-and-40’s.

A slight warm-up is expected during the weekend, with highs in the teens and another chance of snow.
