Wrestling Jamboree takes place in River Falls this weekend
There are plenty of returning champions for this year's Big Rivers Conference/Dunn-St. Croix Wrestling Jamboree. But the meet title will not go to the team with the most champions but with the most top-eight finishers.
RIVER FALLS - There are plenty of returning champions for this year's Big Rivers Conference/Dunn-St. Croix Wrestling Jamboree. But the meet title will not go to the team with the most champions but with the most top-eight finishers.
Indeed,the teams with the most top eight place winners will more than likely come out on top and last's year defending champ, Hudson had 12 out of 14 of its wrestlers place in the top eight. Such depth is why the Raiders have won six Jamboree titles in a row. The last team other than the No. 6 ranked Raiders to win the Jamboree was River Falls in 2006.
Hudson also had a pair of champs in Dima Hawksford and Derek Schindler and will have them again for this year's meet along with seven returning place winners.
This could leave the other teams in the meet scrambling to keep up, especially those who have a pair or three very talented wrestlers. No. 6 ranked Glenwood City has three defending Jamboree champions in Riley Knops, Austin Moe and Adam Holmquist and could have a fourth in Isaac Tuttle, back in the GC line-up after injury. St. Croix Central returns defending champ Cody Nyhagen and could have three more in Kyle Aaby, Carl Moll and Austin Edison. Boyceville returns a champion in Josh Cormican and has candidates for titles in Dominic Olson and Austin Wolfe.
Others squads which have a pair of potential champions are Rice Lake's Cole Paulson and Jimmy Smith in the lower weights; Eau Claire North's Matt Schroeder and Deion Sonsalla in the middleweights; Mondovi's Bryan Larson and Austin Schweinfus and Menomonie's Logan Schlough; Erik Peissig and Jared Baldwin, perhaps the top heavyweight in the meet. The Mustangs did beat the Raiders in dual meets to take the Big Rivers title, the first team outside the trio of Hudson/Chippewa Falls/River Falls to win the BRC since 1991.
No. 10 ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood doesn't have a lot of potential champions on paper outside of perhaps Zach Newton at 145 pounds but what they do have is the strong chance of placing at least 12 wrestlers in the top eight and seeing how far it takes them. Last season SVE had one of its best showings in the meet finishing fourth out of 12 schools.
The meet will take place at River Falls High School starting at 10 a.m. and will go all day.
