Minnesota News-- President Obama is in north Minneapolis this afternoon pushing his anti-gun-violence plan -- and mental health issues will also be in the conversation after the shootings in Connecticut and at Accent Signage.
President Obama is in north Minneapolis this afternoon pushing his anti-gun-violence plan -- and mental health issues will also be in the conversation after the shootings in Connecticut and at Accent Signage. Sue Abderholden with the Minnesota chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will be among those meeting with Obama. Abderholden says only five percent of all violent acts in the U-S are committed by people with mental illness. Advocates are asking for more funding for early-intervention mental health treatment.

President Obama's visit to Minnesota today (Mon) kicks off what's been dubbed "gun week" at the Minnesota Legislature. There will be hearings at the State Capitol on a number of gun-control bills, including an assault weapons ban, restrictions on high-capacity magazines -- and a universal background check on gun purchases, sponsored by Saint Paul Democrat Michael Paymar. Good Thunder Republican Tony Cornish opposes the background check bill. He says it's already possible to go after illegal gun sellers and a very small percentage of crime guns have ever come from gun shows.

The two people who died when the car they were riding in fell through the ice on Lake Minnetonka Saturday afternoon have been identified. The Hennepin County Medical examiner says 31-year-old Harland Dietrich of Maple Grove and his 87-year-old grandmother, Mary Ann Haram, died after being submerged for a little under an hour in the frigid waters. Dietrich's car broke through a channel connecting Gray's Bay and Wayzata Bay. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says 14 vehicles have fallen through the ice on Lake Minnetonka this winter.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Pine County. The wanted felon was shot by police Sunday evening as he tried to run from arrest. Investigators have not said what the arrest warrant was for but when they arrived to take him into custody he took off in a car, nearly hitting the officers. Police fired several shots at the suspect, and one of the bullets hit him in the hand. Officials say a chase lasted about a mile before an officer was able to force the suspect's car into a ditch. The suspect is hospitalized, but nobody else was hurt.
