Wednesday State Sports Briefs: Bucks can't hold third quarter lead
Wisconsin Sports-- The Denver Nuggets needed a last-minute surge to beat the Milwaukee Bucks last night, 112-104 in Colorado.
DENVER - The Denver Nuggets needed a last-minute surge to beat the Milwaukee Bucks last night, 112-104 in Colorado.
The Bucks led by 15 at the half, and by seven after the third period. Milwaukee was still up by seven in the closing minutes, when Denver finished the game with a 19-4 run. Guards Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis committed three key turnovers during that stretch. Coach Jim Boylan said the Nuggets used a fast, switching defense by its smaller players – and it caused problems for his team. Boylan said he wanted to stay with a big and punishing lineup – but they had to re-adjust as the game slipped away. The loss ruined a career night by Bucks’ veteran center Samuel Dalembert. He made his first nine shots on his way to a career-high 35 points, with 12 rebounds. Ty Lawson and Danilo Gallinari each scored 22 for Denver, which has now won seven straight for the first time in over two years. It was also the Nuggets’ sixth consecutive home victory. The Bucks got a scare with 4:41 left when their shot-blocking leader Larry Sanders fell hard on his back and right hip, while challenging a dunk shot. He was helped off the court, and he said afterward that X-rays turned up quote, “nothing severe.” Milwaukee dropped to three games above .500 with the loss. The Bucks play at Utah tonight.

Donald Driver will take his bows today, as hundreds of Green Bay Packers fans and dignitaries will attend his retirement ceremony. More than a-thousand fans waited for hours in the cold last Friday to snap up free tickets at the Lambeau Box Office. They were gone in 13 minutes. The 38-year-old Driver leaves as the Packers’ all-time leader in catches and receiving yards over a 14-year NFL career, all with Green Bay. Driver first announced his retirement last Thursday, after the Packers stopped just short of saying they wouldn’t bring him back in 2013. He said it allows him to leave on his own terms. And while Driver said he could have played somewhere else this fall, he owes it to Packer Nation to retire after wearing only the storied green-and-gold. Marketing agent Brian Lammi indicates that Driver may be too busy to un-retire at training camp time, like Brett Favre did twice after leaving Green Bay. Lammi said he and Driver have had talks about broadcast opportunities in both sports and other entertainment – and there’s a good chance he’ll be hosting some kind of national show. Lammi calls it the beginning of Driver’s next career.

Aaron Rodgers says he’s ready to “heal things up” with Brett Favre and “move forward.” The two appeared together during last weekend’s NFL Honors show – and while their exchange look awkward, Rodgers said it was scripted that way, and there was really nothing awkward about it. On his final Milwaukee radio show of the season yesterday, Rodgers said it didn’t take much for him to accept an invitation from the show’s producers to appear with Favre. Rodgers said he didn’t want to say much about their past – but as Favre heads to the Hall-of-Fame and gets his Number-Four retired, Rodgers said it’s time for the healing process to begin. Rodgers said it was important that Favre be recognized for all of his achievements in Green Bay, and he hopes last weekend’s show is a start toward making it happen. The two have had a cold relationship since Rodgers replaced Favre as the Packers’ starting quarterback in 2008 – when Favre tried to un-retire and ended up leaving for the New York Jets. In the years that followed, Favre was accused of giving the Detroit Lions inside information about the Packer offense – and Favre once said Rodgers lucked into his situation with teammates that grew during Favre’s watch. Rodgers stayed quiet and diplomatic, at least publicly.

His agent says Charles Woodson wants to stay with the Green Bay Packers – even though the numbers are against him. The 36-year-old veteran was moved to safety this year in Green Bay’s base defense. But the team didn’t get to see much of him there, because he sat out about half the season with his second broken collarbone. It would very expensive the Packers to keep Woodson. He’s scheduled to get a roster bonus of $2.5 million dollars come July, with a base salary of $6.5 million next season. With incentives, the Packers could end up paying Woodson over $10-million dollars. Agent Carl Poston says it’s worth it. Poston admits Woodson is quote, “not what he was, but he’s much more valuable than most defensive players, period.” Poston also said the Packers have not said anything yet about bringing Woodson back. And in the agent’s view, no news is good news. It’s likely that the Packers will make a decision on Woodson before the league year begins on March 12th. The team is about to face some big financial pressures as it attempts to reach new deals with Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, and B.J. Raji.

The Marquette University women’s basketball team was crushed at third-ranked Connecticut last night, 94-37. The Golden Eagles opened the game with a three-pointer from Chelsie Butler – but they only made five other shots for the remainder of the first half, and they were down 62-17 at the break. UConn led by as many as 58 in the second half. The Huskies out-shot Marquette 63-to-25 percent, and they out-rebounded the Eagles 43-31. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis made her first eight shots for Connecticut. She scored 24, including five three-pointers. Freshman Brooklyn Pumroy led Marquette in scoring with 11. UConn improved to 21-1 overall, and 8-1 in the Big East. Marquette fell to 3-6 in the conference and 11-11 overall. They’re now 0-8 lifetime against UConn. The Eagles’ next game is on Sunday at Villanova.

University of Wisconsin sophomore Ivy Martin has been named the Big Ten women’s swimmer of the week. Martin broke a 15-year-old school record in the 100-yard freestyle with 49-point-75 seconds at last weekend’s Big Ten Quad Duals. She also set a new UW Natatorium record in the 50-freestyle with a time of 22.32. Those two events were among five in which Martin took first. She has helped three UW relay teams to victories in the 200-yard event, the 200-medley, and the 400-relay. UW's women's team won two out three duals at the meet to finish the regular season with an 8-7 overall record, 4-3 in the Big Ten. The Big Ten meet will be from Feb. 20-22 at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis.

UW-Milwaukee will induct five former athletes into its Hall-of-Fame this weekend. They are women’s basketball standout Maria Viall – two-time Horizon League soccer player-of-the-year Antou Jallow – women’s soccer player Josha Krueger Kruvand, and track-and-field athletes Jerry Stern and Nick Gretz. Gretz was the league’s track athlete of the year in 2007. Viall was twice named the league’s basketball player-of-the-year, and she was UWM’s all-time Division I leader in both scoring and rebounding. All five athletes will be honored in a ceremony on Saturday at the Milwaukee Athletic Club.

And executive senior AD Amanda Braun of Northeastern will have her forum a week from Friday.
