Minnesota Sports Briefs: Top quarterback flips to commitment to attend U
Minnesota Sports-- Three-star rated quarterback Donovahn Jones has reportedly changed his commitment to Minnesota. The Henry Daily Herald in Georgia reports Jones flipped his commitment from Missouri to Minnesota. Jones would become the 18th commitment in the Gophers recruiting class.

It's National Signing Day for high school football players. Top prep players across the country will be signing official National Letters of Intent with the college of their choice. Jerry Kill and the Golden Gophers will be manning their fax machine the U of M campus as well and will address the media later today with the results.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are back at the Target Center for game No. 5 of their six-game homestand. So far the Wolves have dropped three of the first four games including falling 100-98 to Portland on Monday night. They've also dropped 12 of 14 overall and against the Spurs, Minnesota's record is no better as they've dropped 16 of the last 18 meetings. Action gets underway tonight at 8 p.m.

Timberwolves forward Andrei Kirilenko will receive the Euroscar European Player of the Year Award tonight prior to the game against San Antonio. It's an annual award given to the best European basketball player, regardless of where he plays in the world. The award is given by the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. This will be Kirilenko's first time receiving the honor.

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve will be one of four recipients of a Special Merit Award this afternoon. It's part of the National Girls and Women in Sport Day celebration at the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda. The event begins at noon and will honor individuals in five separate categories: Special Merit Awards, Media Award, Wilma Rudolph Award, Marie Berg Award and the Breaking Barriers Award.

The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is back on the road tonight following a successful two game win streak at home over the past week. The Gophers broke up a four game losing streak with wins over Nebraska and Iowa. Tonight things heat back up again though against the No. 12 Spartans in a rematch from the Big 10 opener back on December 31st when Minnesota came out on top 76-63. That one was at Williams Arena though. Tonight, the stage shifts to the Breslin Center where MSU is a perfect 13-0 this season and haven't lost to the Gophers on their court since 1997. Tap is set for 6 p.m. from East Lansing.

The top ranked University of Minnesota men's hockey team is in midweek preparations for it's weekend match up with No. 8 ranked St. Cloud State. The Huskies lead the WCHA with a 14-5-1 record and they'll play host to the defending WCHA champion Gophers with a pair of games Friday and Saturday at the National Hockey and Event Center. SCSU currently leads the WCHA with 29 points and sit in first place by three points and hold a five point lead over Minnesota.

St. Cloud State senior forward Drew LeBlanc of Hermantown yesterday was named the WCHA Player of the Week. He helped the Huskies continue their 6 game unbeaten streak dating back to January 5th with a pair of wins over Bemdiji State. Against the Beavers, he put together a three point weekend including his nation's best 30th assist. On the season LeBlanc as eight goals, 30 assists and 38 points.

The Minnesota Wild took Tuesday off as a travel day as they licked their wounds following a pair of road losses including Monday's 2-1 loss at Phoenix. Today they'll return to the ice at St. Thomas Academy as the Xcel Energy Center will be in use today preparing for the Lady Ga Ga concert. The Wild next return to game action on Thursday night when they host the Vancouver Canucks and then again on Saturday, at home, against the Nashville Predators.

The Wild were able to show off part of their new lineup on Monday night in Phoenix when rookie Charlie Coyle made his NHL debut after being recalled from Houston. The other part of the shake-up will debut today at practice when newly accquired enforcer Mike Rupp hits the ice for the first time as a member of the Minnesota Wild. The 6' 5", 245 pound forward is expected to make his Wild debut offically on Thursday night against the Vancouver Canucks.

American skier Lindsey Vonn is hospitalized with torn knee ligaments and a fractured leg after crashing during a super-G run at the world championships in Austria. The U.S. Ski Team says Vonn suffered a torn ACL and MCL in her right knee as well as a lateral tibial plateau fracture. She will be sidelined for the rest of this season, but is expected to return for the start of the 2013-14 campaign and should be ready for next February's 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. The 2010 Olympic downhill champion lost a ski after a jump and crashed into a gate Tuesday as she slid off the course. She was treated by medical personnel personnel on the slope before being transported to a hospital in a helicopter.
