PRESCOTT - Colton Berger's leaping shot at the basket beat the buzzer and helped the ninth ranked Durand High School boys' basketball team beat Prescott 50-48 Thursday evening.

With :1.4 seconds left Durand in-bounded the ball underneath its own basket and threw up to where Berger could make the quick put-back basket at the buzzer.

"He's very athletic and very crafty with his moves," Prescott head coach Nick Johnson said. "They got the ball to him exactly where it needed to be."

Berger scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. Also scoring in double figures for the Panthers, 18-1 overall and 11-1 in the Middle Border Conference, were Jack Komro with 16 points and point guard Jake Winter with 10.

"They're tough to defend because they have so many players who can score," Johnson said. "Winter, for example, isn't one of their leading scorers yet he stepped up to get 10 points and the same was true with Berger."

And yet PHS did defend well enough to be in position to win the game. Trailing 36-32 midway through the fourth quarter, the Redbirds went on a 6-0 run after back-to-back old-fashion ed three-point plays to Mike Brookshaw and Nick Jacobsen. PHS led 45-42 with under two minutes to go but Durand took the lead off three-pointers from Jake Weber and Jack Komro. Prescott then tied the score again on a three-pointer from Clay Seifert with :12 seconds remaining.

Seifert finished with 14 points and Brookshaw had 15. Jacobsen finished eight points.

The loss eliminates Prescott, 12-5 overall and 7-4 in the Middle Border Conference, from contention for the league title. However they can't worry about it because they play again tonight against St. Paul CHOF. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. They host Somerset at home Monday.
