Panther wrestlers rise to challenge, easily win regional
Ellsworth High school's wrestling team only led the WIAA Division St. Croix Central Regional by seven points over the host school 174-167 heading into the finals. But it as in the finals where the No. 4 Panthers dominated to win its ninth straight title.

HAMMOND - Ellsworth High school's wrestling team only led the WIAA Division St. Croix Central Regional by seven points over the host school 174-167 heading into the finals. But it as in the finals where the No. 4 Panthers dominated to win its ninth straight title.
EHS tallied 293 points, well ahead of SCC's 206. Prescott finished in third in the six-team field with 181 points.
Ellsworth didn't reach its goal of qualifying all of its wrestlers for individual sectionals next weekend in Somerset but they got 12 across, including nine champions. In six direct matches between two Panther teams in the finals, Ellsworth went 5-1, sealing another title and a bid to the team sectionals Tuesday which they host. EHS will take on No. 10 Neillsville/Loyal/Greenwood in the semifinals while No. 7 Amery faces Rice Lake. Wrestling starts at 6 p.m.
Winning titles for the Purple were John Albarado at 106, Jens Lantz at 120, Brad Cain at 126; Tristan Mueller at 132; Logan Kemmerer at 152; Gabe Frandson at 160; Jake Murphy at 195, Brady Zimmer at 220 and Brodey Kemmerer at heavyweight.
Prescott had a very good day, reaching its goal of qualifying six wrestlers for sectionals. Nick Opdahl won the regional title at 138 pounds.
