MADISON - The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team beat Indiana yesterday, 65-52 at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers shot 53-percent in the first half, and took 14-point lead to the locker room. Wisconsin was still up by 12 with eight minutes left, but they only scored six more points the rest of the way. And the Hoosiers were even worse, scoring just five in the final 8:03. Wisconsin out-shot Indiana for the game, 44-to-40 percent, and the Badgers weathered an 0-for-11 streak from three-point range in the second half. Morgan Paige led Wisconsin with 17 points. Jasmine McGhee scored 14 for Indiana, which dropped to 1-10 in the Big Ten and 10-and-14 overall. Cassie Rochel had 15 rebounds to go with 12 points for the Badgers, who improved to 3-8 in the conference and 11-13 overall. Coach Bobbie Kelsey said Wisconsin needed the win badly, after coming off a double-overtime loss to Ohio State. The Badgers will host Purdue on Thursday night.

The Marquette University women's basketball team went above .500 overall, with a 60-56 win at Villanova yesterday. The Golden Eagles out-rebounded 'Nova 42-to-27. And Marquette had a 12-to-2 scoring edge in second-chance points. The Eagles trailed by two at the break, and they didn’t create much breathing room until Sarina Simmons hit a three-pointer with 1:17 left which put Marquette up by five. The Eagles’ defense held the Wildcats to 26-percent shooting in the second half. Villanova shot 0-for-12 from three-point range in the final 20 minutes. Laura Sweeney had a game-high 26 points for 'Nova, which dropped to 5-5 in the Big East and 16-7 overall. Katherine Plouffe scored 15 for Marquette, which improved to 4-6 in the conference and 12-11 overall. The Eagles will play at Cincinnati on Wednesday night.

The brackets were posted yesterday for the WIAA state boys’ high school basketball tournament. Regional play begins a week from tomorrow night. It will culminate with the state tournament in Madison on March seventh-through-ninth. The girls’ regionals begin on February 26th. Their state tournament was moved from Madison to Green Bay this year. It begins March 14th at the Resch Center, near Lambeau Field.

Mark Van Guilder scored the game's only goal for the Milwaukee Admirals, in a 1-0 American Hockey League victory over Peoria at the Bradley Center. Van Guilder scored just four minutes and 17 into the game, and it held up for the remaining 55-plus minutes. Admirals’ coach Dean Evason watched the game online from home, after he had his appendix removed on Saturday. Magnus Hellberg had 30 saves in his first start since January 20th, as Milwaukee improved to 20-19-3-3. Milwaukee, Peoria, and Rockford are all tied for third in the American Hockey League's Midwest Division, each with 46 points. Grand Rapids leads with 58.

The Milwaukee Wave won its team-record 16th straight game yesterday, 14-to-11 at home over Rochester. The Wave was up 10-4 at the half. The Lancers cut the lead to one by scoring five unanswered points in the third quarter. Milwaukee was short-handed in the final minute due to a penalty by Ian Bennett. But the Wave hung on improve to 17-2 on the season. Forwards Nick Perera and Israel Sesay each scored twice for Milwaukee, which leads the MISL standings by a half-game over Baltimore. The Wave will open a five-game road trip next Sunday at Missouri.

Rhinelander native Dan Forsman tied for 52nd at the Allianz tournament on the PGA Champions Tour. Forsman shot an even-par 72 in his third-and-final round yesterday in Boca Raton Florida. He finished one-over-par for the weekend at 217. Rocco Mediate won the tournament at 17-under-199.

The University of Wisconsin wrestling team got crushed by fourth-ranked Minnesota 34-5 in its final dual meet of the season Sunday afternoon at the UW Field House. Tyler Graff won the Badgers' only match of the day with a technical fall at 133 pounds. The 18th-ranked Badgers went 4-4 in the Big Ten and 7-6 overall, a far cry from the 0-8 showing they had in Big Ten duals last season. Minnesota finished its Big Ten dual meets at 7-1 in the conference and 13-2 overall, good for second place behind Iowa. Wisconsin will now get ready for the NWCA National Duals next weekend at Kent State.

The University of Wisconsin softball team edged Notre Dame 6-5 in 11 innings yesterday at the First Pitch Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina. Notre Dame took the lead in the top of the 11th, but Mary Massei hit a two-run walk-off homer as the Badgers improved to 4-1 after the season's opening weekend. Cassandra Darrah went all the way, striking out 10 to improve to 3-0.
