Wednesday State Sports Roundup: UW-Milwaukee snap seven-game losing streak
Wisconsin Sports-- The UW- Milwaukee men’s basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 71-53 home victory over Loyola of Chicago last night.
MILWAUKEE - The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 71-to-53 home victory over Loyola of Chicago last night.
The Panthers were down by five at the break. But they took charge with a 19-to-3 run early in the second half. Austin Arians gave Milwaukee the lead for good on a fast-break dunk with 15:43 to go. The Ramblers got to within six later on, but the Panthers ended the game with a 15-to-3 run to win only their second Horizon League contest against 10 losses. Paris Gulley led UWM with 21 points, but only made four field goals. Gulley made 13-of-his-16 free throws. Milwaukee shot a blistering 63-percent in the second half, while holding Loyola to 24-percent in the final 20 minutes. Jordan Hicks scored 12 for Loyola, which lost its third straight and fell to 3-9 in the Horizon League and 13-12 overall. Milwaukee is now 6-20 overall. Its next game is on Friday night at Youngstown State.

The Milwaukee Bucks have their closest thing to a “must win” game tonight, when they host Philadelphia. The Bucks are on a four-game losing streak, and they lead Philly by only three games for the eighth-and-final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Tonight’s game is the last one before the All-Star break – and if the Bucks win, it would give them something positive going into the second half. It would put them one game over .500, with a four-game cushion in the playoff race. A win by the 76’ers would close the gap to two games and put the Bucks below .500 going into the break. Philly is 22-28, while the Bucks are at 25-25. Milwaukee center Larry Sanders saw a doctor in Chicago yesterday about his bruised lower back that’s not healing after he was injured eight days ago at Denver. And the Bucks have not been the same since losing him. Milwaukee has lost six-of-its-last-seven, and they’re 9-9 since coach Jim Boylan took over for Scott Skiles in early January.

There were no surprises last night in the opening round of the state high school hockey playoffs. The higher-seeded teams won all 18 boys’ regional openers – plus the one girls’ opener that was scheduled. Sixty-four boys’ teams are still alive, along with 32 girls’ squads. Most had first-round byes, including all the top seeds, defending boys’ champion Green Bay Notre Dame, and girls’ champion Schofield D.C. Everest. Regional finals will be played tomorrow and Friday, and those winners will advance to next week’s sectionals.

The Milwaukee Admirals beat Abbotsford of Canada 2-1 last night at the Bradley Center. Taylor Beck scored the eventual game-winner with 16:25 left, putting the Admirals up 2-to-nothing at the time. Juuso Puustinen scored the Admirals’ other goal in the second period. Rookie goal-tender Magnus Hellberg had 29 saves, and Milwaukee coach Dean Evason returned after having his appendix removed last weekend.

University of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says his football team and others in the Big Ten will stop playing non-conference games against former Division I-AA schools. On a Madison radio show last night, Alvarez said the Big Ten’s non-conference schedule is quote, “ridiculous … and it’s not very appealing.” He said the schools agreed to schedule future games only against fellow Division I opponents, with no more dates with Football Championship Subdivision schools. The Badgers have one of those teams on its schedule for this fall – Tennessee Tech on September seventh. They’ll also play Massachusetts, which moved to up to Division I last year in football. A few years ago, FCS team Appalachian State upset Michigan. And Wisconsin would have lost to FCS Cal Poly had that team’s kicker not missed three extra points – including one in overtime.

University of Wisconsin football coach Gary Andersen has reportedly nailed down his staff for his first year in Madison. The Wisconsin State Journal says Andersen will announce the hiring of Chris Beatty as the new receivers’ coach as early as today. Beatty was fired at Illinois at the end of last season. He handled most of the play calling, and the Illini had the worst offensive numbers in the Big Ten Conference. Beatty has also coached receivers at Vanderbilt, running backs at Illinois, and backs and slot receivers at West Virginia – where he was regarded as a strong recruiter.

The Marquette University women’s basketball team will try to keep its overall record above .500 tonight, when it plays at Cincinnati. The Golden Eagles are 12-11 overall, and 4-6 in the Big East, after a four-point win at Villanova last Sunday. Marquette was strong on the boards in that game, with a 42-to-27 rebounding edge – and Katherine Plouffe scored 15 points for the Eagles. Cincinnati has yet to win a conference game in 10 tries, and they’re 8-15 overall. The Bearcats are led by redshirt junior Dayeesha Hollins with 15 points and four-and-a-half rebounds per game. Sophomore Tiffany Turner has one of the league’s highest field-goal shooting percentages at just under 54.

Three teams are still within striking distance of the WIAC men’s basketball title, with two regular season games left. UW-Stevens Point is still the leader at 12-2. Whitewater is a game back at 11-3, and Stout is two back at 10-4. The Pointers can clinch the season championship with a victory at Stout tonight – and a Whitewater loss at Oshkosh. If both those things don’t happen, the race will come down to the final regular season contests on Saturday. Also tonight, UW-La Crosse plays at River Falls. And Platteville travels to Eau Claire. Whitewater is ranked 14th in Division III, while the Pointers are No. 15.
_________________________________________________________________________
Meanwhile, UW-Whitewater can clinch the WIAC women’s crown with a home victory tonight over second-place Oshkosh. The 24th-ranked Warhawks are 12-2, while unranked Oshkosh is 11-3. Third-place Stevens Point can still grab a share of the title if Whitewater loses both its final games and Oshkosh loses its finale on Saturday. The 23rd-ranked Pointers are 10-4. They host Stout this evening. Eau Claire is at Platteville, and La Crosse entertains River Falls.

The field is set for the Northern Athletics Conference men’s basketball tournament which begins on Saturday. Lakeland earned the top seed, after winning the North Division crown at 13-3. Lakeland will host eighth-seeded Marian on Saturday. South Division champion Aurora has the Number-two seed, and will entertain Benedictine. Third-seeded Dominican hosts Rockford. And fourth-seeded Concordia-Mequon is at home against No. 5 Milwaukee School of Engineering. Saturday’s winners will square off next Tuesday in the semi-finals. The tournament title – and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tourney – will be up for grabs a week from Saturday.

The Marquette University men’s golf team went 3-0 at The Match Play event which wrapped up yesterday in Reunion, Florida. The Golden Eagles defeated Cleveland State 14-and-a-half to six-and-a-half in their final match yesterday. Marquette had closer margins on Monday in beating Seton Hall and DePaul. Pat Sanchez carded four birdies en route to a three-under-par 69. He won his match for the Eagles, along with Will Joiner, Adam Chester, Michael Motz, and Nick Nelson.

Green Bay Packers’ running back Cedric Benson has paid over $850 in fines to settle a pair of traffic tickets, and one of two counts of letting animals run at large. The fines avoided the need for Benson to appear in Manitowoc County Circuit Court today. He was given four citations in January for driving without a valid license, going 41-miles-an-hour over the speed limit, and letting his Rottweiler dogs run loose on two separate occasions. Authorities said the dogs attacked 17 calves at his neighbor’s farm near Maribel in December, causing deep wounds in some cases. Officials said Benson then put up a fence to keep the dogs on his land – but they got loose again 11 days later. One of the animal-at-large citations remains unsettled. If the fine is not paid, the 30-year-old Benson will have to appear in court next Wednesday.

UW-Milwaukee senior Dan Simon has been named the Horizon League men’s indoor field athlete of the week. Simon was the top collegiate finisher in the heptathlon at the GVSU Big Meet last weekend. His total score of 5,012 points was the second-highest in UWM’s history. Aisha Potts-Tyre of Detroit is the honored women’s field athlete.
