Different match-ups, different result for SVE in sectionals
Clear Lake moved some of its wrestlers to different weight classes after it had lost a dual meet earlier in the season to Spring Valley/Elmwood. It a made big difference in the rematch.
GLENWOOD CITY - Clear Lake moved some of its wrestlers to different weight classes after it had lost a dual meet earlier in the season to Spring Valley/Elmwood. It a made big difference in the rematch.
The Warriors avenged the early-season loss to the Redbirds winning 31-28 Tuesday evening in the WIAA Division 3 Glenwood City Team Sectional.
Although the final score appears close it's only because Clear Lake forfeited the final two matches. They built up a 31-12 lead by winning five out of six matches from 285 pounds through to 138 pounds, right through the usual strength of the SVE line-up.
From that 44-26 loss to SVE in December, the Warriors have gone on to win the Northern Badger tournament, the Lakeland Conference title, the Lakeland West dual meet title and regional and sectional crowns as well.
Some different outcomes included Clear Lake's Ian Ruble getting a pinfall in February after losing in December's dual meet; Chant LaBlanc and Zach Elmer turning around closes losses into close wins; Cody Shafer moving down from 120 pounds to 113 and scoring a pinfall; Tim Anderson moving down to 126 to 113 and getting a huge pinfall and Mitch Paulson moving down from 152 to 138 and getting a major decision.
SVE moved down Jed Schlegel from 138 to 132 to try and stem the Warrior tide but was beaten in overtime 4-2 by Andrew Colbeth who also turned around a December loss into a win.
Perhaps the biggest difference from December's dual meet is Spring Valley/Elmwood losing five matches decided by two points or less.
The Redbirds' wins include Ethan Hofacker's 11-7 decision of Mitch Lein; Mike Roeseler's pin at 220 in 4:55 to tie the score at 9-9; Tyler Berg's 7-5 decision over Alex Colbeth at 126 and Zach Newton's 9-0 major decision over Cameron Crawford at 145.
