SPRING VALLEY—The Spring Valley Stagehands will hold auditions for “Oliver” at the Spring Valley Theater this Sunday from 8-10 p.m., and next Monday and Tuesday, from 6-9 p.m.
“Oliver” is the musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale of an orphan who runs away from an orphanage and joins up with a group of boys trained to be pickpockets by Fagin, an elderly mentor.
A large cast of characters needs to be filled. Musical leads are: Oliver Twist (boy unchanged voice-ages 8-13), The Artful Dodger (boy unchanged voice-ages 10-15/will consider an older teenage male), Fagin (male baritone-age 40-65), Nancy (female alto-age 18-35), Bill Sikes (male baritone-age 20-45), Mr. Bumble (male baritone-age 40-65), Widow Corney (female soprano-age 40-65), Bet (female alto-age 16-28). Players must feel comfortable with choreography. Directors are considering doubling the Oliver and Dodger roles.
Non-Singing Leads are: Mr. Brownlow (male-age 50-75), Dr. Grimwig (male-age 40-55).
Chorus Roles are: Workhouse Boys/Fagin’s Gang (boys, unchanged voices-ages 6-15)-considering 9-12 total. Players must feel comfortable with choreography. (Although organizers would like to cast boys, they will consider girls in the “Gang”-same ages.)
Townspeople/Bar Patron Roles are: Chorus-male and female members; soprano, alto, tenors, and basses; ages from 12-75. Players must feel comfortable with simple choreography (considering up to 12 total).
Ages listed above are general guidelines. Exceptions will be considered.
The audition process is: Auditioners seeking singing roles must come with a prepared song and accompanist or tape. A pianist will be provided, if absolutely necessary. Please choose a song showing off the voice to its best. Have it rehearsed and ready to perform. It does not need to be memorized.
Auditioners will be asked to learn and perform a simple choreographed sequence-in groups and/or singly. Auditioners for lead roles will also be asked to read from the script (available only at tryouts).
Offstage help is needed, too!
Help is also needed with set construction, painting, props, costumes, hair and make-up, advertising, lights, sound, tickets and house management. Let organizers know if interested in sharing talents offstage.
Performance dates are scheduled for May 30, 31, June 1 and 2 (matinee date), June 6, 7, 8 and 9 (matinee date).
