Morning State Sports Briefs: UW grid assistants to get more money
Wisconsin Sports-- UW-Madison will pay its Badger football assistants quite a bit more than those who served under Bret Bielema a year ago.
MADISON - UW-Madison will pay its Badger football assistants quite a bit more than those who served under Bret Bielema a year ago.
Six assistants under new coach Gary Andersen have signed contracts – and they’ll be paid a combined $1,860,000. That’s close to what Bielema’s nine coaches made last year, with $1,973,000. Three of Andersen’s new assistants have yet to sign contracts. That includes receivers’ coach Chris Beatty from Illinois, who agreed earlier this week to come on board. The Badgers announced his hiring yesterday, rounding out Andersen’s staff for his first season at the UW.

The UW-Green Bay women's basketball team crushed Cleveland State 88-51 at home last night. The Phoenix took control with a 17-0 run that lasted almost 13 minutes for most of the first half and part of the second. Green Bay never trailed in winning its 15th straight game. Senior Sarah Eichler scored her one-thousandth career point on a turnaround lay-up early in the second half. Six Green Bay players scored in double figures, and Eichler led the way with 14. The Phoenix out-shot Cleveland 54-to-31 percent. Shalonda Winton had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings, who dropped to 4-7 in the Horizon League and 12-12 overall. Green Bay is just one spot away from the Top-25 in both national polls. They’re now 10-0 in the conference and 20-2 overall. The Phoenix will host Youngstown State tomorrow.

The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team fell to 18th-ranked Purdue in Madison last night, 58-48. Morgan Paige, the Badgers’ leading scorer, was held to a season-low four points. Wisconsin was up by eight at the break. Purdue tied the game early in the second half – and it stayed close until the Boilermakers took the lead for good on a jumper by Drey Mingo with four minutes left. Purdue then out-scored the Badgers 10-to-3 to get the win. K.K. Houser scored 20 points for the Boilermakers, who improved to 19-5 overall and 8-3 in the Big Ten. Jacki Gulczynski had 19 for Wisconsin, scoring in double figures for her 18th straight game. Cassie Rochel had 13 rebounds and a career-high seven blocked shots, as the Badgers dropped to 3-9 in the Big Ten and 11-14 overall. They’ll play at Illinois on Monday night.

A late comeback effort fell short for the UW-Milwaukee women, as they lost at home to Youngstown State 58-56. The Panthers cut a seven-point deficit to one with just under a minute left. But the Penguins made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 25 seconds, as they won their sixth straight game. Junior Emily Decorah scored a career-high 20 points for UWM, and Sami Tucker had 11 points and eight rebounds. Heidi Schlegel and Brandi Brown each scored 15 for Youngstown State, which improved to 7-2 in the Horizon League and 17-5 overall – their best to this point in 15 years. Milwaukee fell to 1-8 in the conference and 5-16 overall. The Panthers will host Cleveland State tomorrow.

There were a couple of upsets last night, as the state high school hockey regionals began in earnest. On the boys’ side, Milwaukee University School – a No. 2 seed – lost to No. 7 seeded Mequon Homestead 3-1. All eight boys’ No. 1 seeds won their only regional contests, including last year’s champion Green Bay Notre Dame. Two teams that were seeded fifth – Sauk-Prairie and Waupaca – had mild upsets over fourth-seeded opponents. Twenty-seven regional finals were played last night, and five more are on tap for this evening. On the girls’ side, third-seeded Green Bay East lost to No. 6 Fond du Lac, 3-2 in overtime. All the top seeds survived – and that included the defending champion, Schofield D.C. Everest. Eleven of the 16 regional finals were played last night, with five more tonight. Sectionals begin next week.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team will play second-ranked Minnesota tonight in Madison. And then they’ll take off for Chicago, for an outdoor game at Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon in the Hockey City Classic. The 18th-ranked Badgers are in fifth place in the WCHA with 25 points. The Gophers are third in the conference with 26. Saint Cloud State leads the conference with 32 points, and the surging Badgers still hope they can knock off the leaders. Wisconsin ends the regular season at home against Saint Cloud State in three weeks. The Badgers are 9-6-7 in the conference and 12-9-7 overall, after a win and a tie against Bemidji State last weekend. Meanwhile, the seventh-ranked Wisconsin women will host Minnesota-Duluth tomorrow night and Sunday afternoon. It’s the final home series of the regular season for Wisconsin, and both games in the new LaBahn Arena are sold out. The Badgers are third in the WCHA with 43 points. They’ll face a fourth-place Duluth squad which has 40 points.
