ST. PAUL -- The Mayo Clinic's request for state funding toward a major expansion in Rochester sailed past the first of several committee stops, when the state House of Representatives Jobs and Economic Development Committee endorsed the bill yesterday.

Mayo is asking the state to cover some public infrastructure costs to help pave the way for a multi-billion dollar development plan in downtown Rochester.

Mayo officials have suggested the state could use future tax revenue to pay for more than $500 million in upgrades, and say the money wouldn't be used to fund construction at the clinic itself.
