Wisconsin Sports-- Wisconsin-born Danica Patrick has won the pole for next Sunday’s Daytona-500
DAYTONA, Fla. - Wisconsin-born Danica Patrick has won the pole for next Sunday’s Daytona-500.
Patrick – who was born in Beloit and raised in nearby Roscoe Illinois – had a qualifying lap of 196.434 miles an hour. Only Jeff Gordon got close to her speed, as he won the other spot in the front row.
The other positions will be determined on Thursday in a pair of 150-lap qualifying races, in which defending champion Matt Kenseth of Cambridge and Travis Kvapil of Janesville will determine their starting spots.
Patrick’s pole victory was her biggest accomplishment by far in her stock-car career, which is entering its second season. She also became the first woman to get the top spot in any race in NASCAR’s top Sprint Cup circuit.
