Morning State Sports Briefs: Bucks return from All-Star break to play Brooklyn

Wisconsin Sports
-- Larry Sanders figures that he has a 70-percent chance of playing tonight, when the Milwaukee Bucks return from the All-Star break to face the Nets in Brooklyn.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Larry Sanders figures that he has a 70-percent chance of playing tonight, when the Milwaukee Bucks return from the All-Star break to face the Nets in Brooklyn.

Sanders has missed the last four games with a deep bruise in his lower back suffered at Denver earlier this month. The third-year center is still the NBA’s shot-blocking leader with three-point-two rejections per game. And he’s the Bucks’ leading rebounder with eight-and-a-half per contest. His absence is a big reason that Milwaukee lost five-of-seven games going into last weekend’s All-Star break. At practice yesterday, Sanders ran freely up and down the court – and he says he’s ready to put the Milwaukee defense back on his shoulders. Coach Jim Boylan says veteran Samuel Dalembert has done a great job filling in for Sanders. But the 31-year-old Dalembert has had to play his way into shape, after sitting out a good portion of the season under former coach Scott Skiles. Still, Dalembert had three double-doubles in four games. The Bucks are going for a playoff spot with 31 games left. They have a four-game lead over Philadelphia for the eighth-and-final spot in the Eastern Conference. Milwaukee is 26-25. They’ll play a Nets team that’s 31-22.

The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team is now 1-10 on the road, after falling at Illinois last night 60-53. The Fighting Illini were up by 14 early in the second half, when the Badgers had an 11-0 run to make it close. But Illinois responded with a 13-0 run of its own, and held on from there. Nicole Bauman and Morgan Paige each scored 14 for Wisconsin. Jacki Gulczynski was held to just four points, her lowest since November 18th. The Illini was led by Karisma Penn and Adrienne Godbold, who combined for 42 of their team’s 60 points. Penn had 26 points and 14 rebounds, and Godbold scored 16 as Illinois improved to 8-4 in the Big Ten Conference and 15-9 overall. Wisconsin dropped to 3-10 in league play, and 11-15 overall. They’ll play at Northwestern on Saturday.

The Milwaukee Wave won its sixth game over Chicago this season, with a 15-10 victory last night in Hoffman Estates Illinois. Ian Bennett scored a hat trick for the second straight game, as Milwaukee moved into a virtual tie for first place with Baltimore in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The two teams will square off on Saturday in Baltimore.

The Green Bay Packers have released veteran center Jeff Saturday. He played 13 seasons in Indianapolis before joining the Packers as a free agent a year ago. Saturday announced his retirement last month at the Pro Bowl, but he did not sign his departure papers. Reports say he wanted to be officially released by the Packers so he could sign a contract with Indianapolis and retire as a Colt. He was Peyton Manning’s center at Indianapolis until Manning left a year ago. The Packers gained another three-and-three quarter million dollars of salary cap room by releasing him. Media reports say Green Bay is currently about $19-million below their cap.
