ELMWOOD--Elmwood will have its own equestrian team this fall, as the school board approved a request recently.

Advisor Kris Flesberg said seven-to-eight students expressed interest, which was enough for a team. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Horseman’s Association (WIHA) sponsors the sport, with funding provided by the students, and WIHA carries its own insurance. The school’s responsibility will be verifying enrollments of students in the district and holding students to the school’s athletic/activities code.

“The board thought it was a great opportunity for the kids,” she said.

Flesberg said shows will be held on the weekends in September and October, with students providing their own horses and transportation. They will be judged on an individual basis, such as riding technique, and not on the horse. They will be earning points for the team, similar to track and field. The WIHA is a newer association, which is based on the Michigan Interscholastic Horseman’s Association.

Elmwood will be in District 13, which is made up of St. Croix, Pierce, Pepin and Eau Claire counties. The fall will be a busy time for Flesberg, as she is also the school’s cross country coach.

An informational meeting for parents will be held at 6 p.m., Feb. 25, during conferences in Flesberg’s room.
