After the first night of regional tournament action, three Pierce County prep boys basketball teams are out and one didn't even get to play.
No. 1 seed Elmwood's contest with No. 16 Granton was postponed when the team bus for the Bulldogs broken down in Eau Claire. The game will take place tonight in Elmwood with the tip-off at 7 p.m. The winner will take on No. 9 seed Alma/Pepin, who edged No. 8 Blair-Taylor 67-66 last evening at Blair-Taylor. Elmwood defeated Alma/Pepin earlier this season 89-68.
Ellsworth was put out of the Division 3 tournament by West Salem last night 67-61 in West Salem. EHS head coach Rich Powers believed West Salem, despite their No. 6 seed to Ellsworth's 11, was beatable if EHS put forth an all-out effort and they did so, nearly pulling off the upset. EHS had the lead in the third quarter before West Salem exploded for 23 fourth quarter points led by Baily Williams's 25 points. Ellsworth's Chrystian Kulow also scored 25 points but West Salem, 11-12 overall, also got 18 points from Brett Thompson and 14 from Billy Tremain. Ellsworth concludes its season 5-17 overall.
Despite finishing at .500 in conference play Spring Valley was looking for that proverbial signature win this season and No. 4 seed Eau Claire Regis looked to be the place to get it at in the first round of the Division 4 regionals. Unfortunately the Ramblers had other ideas and won 61-46. The No. 5 seeded Cardinals packed its defens tight in the middle to prevent the dibble penetration head coach Rob Bosshart felt had been hurting the club all season. Unfortunately the Ramblers' freshman guard Logan Rohrscheib lit up the Cards' for a game-high 29 points, including eight three-pointers. The Ramblers led 26-11 at halftime. As a team SV actually exceeded Rohrscheib's totals in treys as Zac Webster made five, Ben Becker three and Joe Helmer had two but they came too late to affect the outcome. Regis's outside shooting was bad enough for Valley to deal with also had to overcome the Ramblers size inside but avoid turnovers on offense which have also hurt this season. They couldn't as Regis grabbed 26 rebounds to SV's 18 and Valley committed 13 turnovers. Webster finished with 17 points to lead the way for Spring Valley while Becker had nine points. Valley finishes 9-14 overall, only 1-6 against non-conference foes although SV played a very tough schedule playing Middle Border teams like Prescott, Baldwin-Woodville and Amery along with No. 1 ranked Clayton in Division 5. Regis improves to 12-11 overall and will try to upset No. 4 ranked and undefeated Elk Mound Friday in Elk Mound.
Plum City's season was ended by Marshfield Columbus last night 65-33. The No. 2 seeded Dons improve to 17-6 overall while No. 15 seeded Plum City wraps-up their season at 1-20.
Prescott had a first found bye thanks to being a No. 4 seed in Division 3 and will entertain Neillsville in the regional semifinals Friday at home. The No. 5 seeded Warriors, 19-4 overall, downed No. 12 Black River Falls 58-41 last night. Tip-off for the game is at 7:00 p.m.
