INDIANAPOLIS -- Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman says he has no plans to trade star receiver Percy Harvin.
There has been much off-season speculation that Harvin is unhappy being a Viking and that the team might trade him away. Spielman, who is attending the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, told reporters yesterday that Harvin is a dynamic playmaker who they plan to have on the roster next season.
The Minnesota Timberwolves take on the Thunder tonight in Oklahoma City. Minnesota will then host Golden State on Sunday before heading out on a three-game road trip to the West Coast. The T'wolves have won two-of-three following Wednesday's 94-87 victory over the 76ers. They are now 20-31 on the season. The Thunder are 39-15.
The NFL Scouting Combine is in progress in Indianapolis. Players don't start drills and work outs until Saturday, but coaches and executives have addressed the media. Tight ends, offensive linemen and special teamers hit the field on Saturday, followed by quarterbacks, running backs and wideouts on Sunday. On Monday, defensive linemen and linebackers workout, and Tuesday will feature defensive backs.
Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk, a Minnesota native, is expected to retire today, according to the "Baltimore Sun." Birk has been with the Ravens since 2009, winning the Super Bowl this past season. He was selected in the sixth round out of Harvard by the Vikings in 1998. He is a six-time Pro Bowler He attended high school at Cretin-Derham Hall in his hometown of St. Paul.
The Minnesota Twins open spring training play tomorrow against the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota. The team's first home spring training game in Fort Myers will be Sunday against Tampa Bay. The Twins wrap up exhibition play on March 30th against the Red Sox. Opening Day is April 1st at home against the Detroit Tigers.
NASCAR is ready to kick off the 2013 season with Sunday's running of the Daytona 500. Danica Patrick will be on the pole, with Jeff Gordon alongside in the front row. Patrick made history this past Sunday by becoming the first female to win a pole position in NASCAR's premier series.
A South African judge is expected to issue a ruling at 7:30 am Eastern time on whether to grant bail to South African track star Oscar Pistorius. The Olympic runner and Paralympic champion is back in court for a fourth day of hearings on his bail request. Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder in the Valentine's Day shooting death of his girlfriend. The double-amputee says he mistakenly shot Reeva Steenkamp through a closed bathroom door because he thought a burglar had gotten into his home.
