Morning State Sports Briefs: Flynn may go on trading block again

Wisconsin Sports
-- At the NFL Scouting Combine, Seattle’s general manager said former Packers’ quarterback Matt Flynn might go on the trading block.

INDIANAPOLIS - At the NFL Scouting Combine, Seattle’s general manager said former Packers’ quarterback Matt Flynn might go on the trading block.

John Schneider said he’ll listen to other teams’ offers – but for now at least, he says the Seahawks plan to keep Flynn around as a backup to ex-Badger Russell Wilson. Flynn left the Packers as a free agent a year ago, when Seattle assumed he would be their quarterback of the future. But Wilson won the Seahawks’ starting job over Flynn at last summer’s training camp – and Flynn threw just nine passes during all of last season. He’ll make five-and-a-quarter million dollars next season. At that price, the Seahawks could end up releasing Flynn if he stays in the No. 2 role.

The UW-Milwaukee women’s basketball team survived a late comeback attempt by Valparaiso, as the Panthers beat the host Crusaders 75-71 last night. Milwaukee led by 14 at the half – and they still were still up by 13 with under two minutes left when Valpo went on a 17-3 run to get within two. Angela Rodriguez made two free throws to ice the victory for UWM. Rodriguez and Emily Decorah each scored 15, as the Panthers won their second straight. Milwaukee made 12 three-pointers on the night. Tabitha Gerardot and Shaquira Scott each scored 17 for Valparaiso, which dropped to 4-7 in the Horizon League and 9-15 overall. UWM improved to 3-8 in the conference and 7-16 overall. They’ll play at Wright State tomorrow.

The UW-Parkside men won their first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title, with a 97-68 victory last night over Saint Joseph’s. The Rangers of Kenosha are ranked 13th in the NCAA’s Division II. They’re now 14-2 in conference play, after going just 1-17 in the league a year ago. It was the largest year-to-year turnaround since the GLVC was formed in 1978. Parkside went up by 27 at the half last night, and were never down by less than 22 the rest of the way. Colt Grandstaff led the Rangers with 17 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Damon Ellison Junior scored a game-high 20 off the bench for Saint Joseph’s. Parkside will close out its regular season tomorrow at Indianapolis, and next Thursday at Lewis.

The fifth-seeded UW-Platteville men pulled off a conference tournament upset for the second straight time, as the Pioneers eliminated top-seeded Stevens Point 60-56 last night in the WIAC semi-finals. Platteville led by one at the break. The Pointers made the opening basket of the second half, but Chas Cross put Platteville in front for good on a three-pointer with 19:13 left. Cross scored 21, as the Pioneers advanced to the tournament title game tomorrow at second-seeded UW-Whitewater – which advanced with a 63-59 semi-final win over Stout. Only seven Warhawks played, and four of them scored in double figures, led by Luke Knoble with 15.
