Johnny Sauter of Necedah had a practice lap at 188-point-608 miles an hour, the sixth best in his heat.
The Nationwide Series will open tomorrow with the Drive-for-COPD-300. At the most recent practice, Beloit-born Danica Patrick placed sixth with a one-lap speed of 190-point-247 miles an hour. Matt Kenseth of Cambridge was 24th with a top-speed of 177.256. Kenseth starts 12th on Sunday, as he defends his title from a year ago in the Daytona-500. Paul Menard of Eau Claire starts 17th in the Great American Race, and Travis Kvapil of Janesville is in the 43rd-and-final spot.
