PRESCOTT - Prescott High School boys' basketball team has advanced to the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament finals with a 59-43 win over Neillsville Friday.
The Cardinals, 17-6 overall, will face La Crosse Aquinas, 19-4 overall, in the regional final in La Crosse. The Blugolds are the top seed in the sectional half-bracket while PHS is No. 4. Aquinas, led by University of Wisconsin recruit Bronson Koenig, is ranked No. 4 in Division 3.
Prescott beat Aquinas last season in the regional semifinals but at the time Koenig had just returned to the line-up from a hand-injury after being out for more than a month and was not in playing shape. As a result Aquinas was just 11-12 overall when they faced the Cards' in Prescott and lost 52-42. PHS went on to win the regional title.
Right now the 6-3 senior Koenig is the team leader averaging 17 points per game, 10 rebounds per game and seven assists per game from his point guard position. He led Aquinas with 15 points in their regional semifinal win over Bloomer last night 73-36.
The winner will play either No. 8 ranked and Middle Border champ Durand, 22-1, or defending sectional champion Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, 19-4 in the sectional semifinals next Thursday in Osseo-Fairchild.
Other Middle Border Conference team still active in regional are Somerset, a 68-40 winner over Spooner last night. The Spartans will face Hayward in the regional finals tonight at Somerset. Baldwin-Woodville topped Amery 64-47 and will play Heart O'North champion and 22-1 Barron in the Division 3 regional final at Barron. If all the league teams win tonight, then the sectional would become an MBC tournament with B-W vs. Somerset at New Richmond and Durand vs. Prescott at Osseo-Fairchild next Thursday.
