Saturday State Sports Briefs: New Bucks to play with team against Atlanta tonight

Wisconsin Sports
-- The Milwaukee Bucks expect to have their three newest players in uniform tonight, when they host the Atlanta Hawks.

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Bucks expect to have their three newest players in uniform tonight, when they host the Atlanta Hawks.

The Bucks acquired veteran guard J.J. Redick, forward Gustavo Aron, and guard Ish Smith from Orlando just before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. Milwaukee gave up back-up guards Beno Udrih and Doron Lamb, and forward Tobias Harris. The 28-year-old Redick told reporters yesterday he’ll do the best he can to give the Bucks their best playoff position possible. They hold the eighth-and-final Eastern Conference playoff spot by three-and-a-half games over Philadelphia – and they’re now two games behind Boston for the Number-seven slot. Bucks’ general manager John Hammond said the deal is intended not only for the playoff run, but for the future as well. Redick will be a free agent at the end of the season. He says he’ll consider a longer-term deal with the Bucks – but he won’t decide that until this summer. As for now, Redick hopes to get Milwaukee back on the winning track. The Bucks have lost six of their last seven, and they’re now a game under .500.

The Marquette University men’s basketball team will try to keep its share of first place in the Big East Conference, when it plays at Villanova this evening. The 17th-ranked Golden Eagles are tied with Syracuse and Georgetown, all at 10-3 in league play. Junior guard Vander Blue is the team’s most improved player from a year ago. He has nearly doubled his scoring average, and is now at 15 points a game. Blue has scored in double figures in all but one of his 13 Big East contests. Marquette has won four-of-its-last-five, and is now 19-6 overall. Villanova is 8-6 in the Big East, and 17-10 overall. The Wildcats are coming off an eight-point home win over Rutgers.

Also today, the UW-Milwaukee men play at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis, and the UW-Green Bay men are at Drake, both a part of ESPN’s Bracket Busters’ event. The 25th-ranked Green Bay women host Valparaiso. The Wisconsin Badger women play at Northwestern. The Milwaukee women are at Wright State. And the UW-Parkside women-and-men play at Indianapolis.

Half of the fields are set for next week’s state boys’-and-girls’ high school hockey tournaments in Madison. On the boys’ side, all four No. 1 seeds who played last night won their sectional finals – Superior, Eau Claire Memorial, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, and Fond du Lac. Defending champion Green Bay Notre Dame plays this afternoon. In the girls’ tournament, returning champ Schofield D.C. Everest and top-seeded Onalaska earned spots in the state semi-finals. Two others will join them today.

The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey coach Mark Johnson earned his 300th career victory with the Badgers last night, in a 2-0 shutout at Bemidji State. Molly Donner and Brianna Decker scored, as the sixth-ranked Badgers improved to 16-9-2-and-2 in the WCHA and 20-9-2 overall. Last-place Bemidji has just five conference wins, and is 6-23-2 overall. The teams will close out their two-game series – and their regular seasons – this afternoon.

Four Wisconsin high school wrestlers will go for their third state championships tonight, when the individual tournament wraps up in Madison. Seniors Riley Knops and Austin Moe have both won a pair of titles for Glenwood City. Also shooting for the third crowns are Jens Lantz of Ellsworth, and Jacob Morrissey of Oconto Falls. Tonight’s finals will feature a total of 15 wrestlers who’ve won titles in previous seasons. Thirteen of them are going for back-to-back crowns. The finals begin at 6 p.m. at the Kohl Center.

UW-Milwaukee will try to win its 11th straight men’s title, and its fifth consecutive women’s crown, at the Horizon League indoor track-and-field meet today and tomorrow at Youngstown State. In Division III, Concordia-Mequon is the defending men’s titlist, and Concordia-Chicago is the returning women’s champ at today’s Northern Athletics Conference indoor track meet. It’s being held at UW-Parkside near Kenosha. Concordia-Mequon is going for its fourth team title in the last five years. Aurora has won two championships in three years. 11-time defending champion UW-La Crosse has the men’s lead going into the second-and-final day of the WIAC indoor track meet at Stevens Point. Isaac Vasquez won his third long jump title, to help La Crosse take a nine-and-a-half point lead over second-place Oshkosh. On the women’s side, Oshkosh has the lead as it goes for its third straight league title. The Titans got victories yesterday from Christy Cazzola in the five-thousand meters and Breanna Strupp in the shot put. La Crosse is 10 points behind Oshkosh in second. Monmouth College has both the men’s and women’s leads going into the second-and-final day of the Midwest Conference indoor track meet. Both Monmouth teams are going for their 12th straight league titles in a meet they’re hosting. The Saint Norbert men-and-women from De Pere are in second – and Ripon College is third for both. Megan O’Grady of Carroll won the women’s five-thousand meters yesterday. Benny Swift of Saint Norbert won the men’s mile. Nicole Vanderlin of Saint Norbert won gold in the women’s high jump. Carroll won the men’s 1600-meter sprint relay, and Saint Norbert took the same event for the women.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team is playing a rare Sunday-Monday series against Penn State in Madison. The timing was necessitated by the fact that the state high school wrestling tournament wrapped up yesterday in the Badgers’ normal digs at the Kohl Center. The Badgers have won two of their last three games, and they’re coming off a 3-2 win over Minnesota in their outdoor game at Soldier Field in Chicago last Sunday. Wisconsin is ranked 18th with a record of 13-10-7 overall. Penn State comes in at 12-13. This is a non-conference series for now. The two schools are both entering the new Big Ten hockey conference next fall.

The University of Wisconsin women’s swim team is in seventh place going into the fourth-and-final day of the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis. The Badgers’ Ruby Martin had a career-best time of :53.69 seconds, while placing sixth in the 100-yard breast-stroke.

In the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Milwaukee Wave will play at Baltimore tonight. Both teams are in a virtual tie for first-place. Milwaukee is 18-3, while the Blast is 20-5. And both teams have only one home loss. The Wave is coming off a 15-10 victory at Chicago last Monday night. That came after an eight-point loss to Missouri which ended Milwaukee’s team-record 15-game winning streak.
