Kenseth done in by a transmission problem at Daytona 500

Wisconsin driver Matt Kenseth was on pace to win his second straight Daytona-500, until a transmission problem ended his day about three-fourths of the way through. Kenseth, who's from Cambridge, was in first place for a race-high 86 laps in yesterday's 200-lap event. He and two other Joe Gibbs Racing teammates were running 1-2-3 until Kenseth bowed out during the 150th lap. His teammate Kyle Busch quit two laps later with engine failure. Kenseth finished 37th. Beloit-born Danica Patrick was third until the final laps, when she slipped to eighth. After winning the pole a week ago, Patrick was disappointed with her performance. But it was still the highest finish for a woman in the history of the Great American Race. Patrick also became the first woman to lead laps in the Daytona-500, when she passed Michael Waltrip on a re-start in Lap-90. She stayed in front for two laps before dropping back to third. But it was another ground-breaking moment for Patrick, who in 2005 became the first Indy-Car woman to lead laps in the Indianapolis-500. She led a total of five laps at Daytona, tying Janet Guthrie's career-high for a female in NASCAR's top circuit. Jimmie Johnson emerged from an intense re-start with six laps to go to win his second Sprint Cup opener. Paul Menard of Eau Claire finished 21st. Travis Kvapil of Janesville was 25th.
