Minnesota News-- Best Buy Company is reportedly cutting 400 jobs at its corporate headquarters.
RICHFIELD, Minn. - Best Buy Company is reportedly cutting 400 jobs at its corporate headquarters.
The layoffs are expected to save the Minnesota-based electronics retailer 150-million dollars in administrative costs. Best Buy calls it an initial reduction as part of the 725-million-dollar "Renew Blue" restructuring plan. The company says additional reductions would come later in 2013. Best Buy employs around eight-thousand people in its home state of Minnesota.

The MnSCU Board of Trustees today appointed Connie Gores to be the next president of Southwest Minnesota State University. Gores has been vice president for student life and development at Winona State University since 2007 and served as interim president in 2012. Gores said she is tremendously honored to be selected for this role. MnSCU Chancellor Steven Rosenstone says under Gores' leadership, Winona State improved academic quality and has boosted retention and graduate rates to record levels. Gores will begin her new position July 1st.

Family and friends of a missing St. Paul woman plan to spend the day passing out fliers and searching for clues in her disappearance. Thirty-year-old Kira Trevino didn't show up for work last Friday at Delia's store in the Mall of America. Early Monday, police found Trevino's empty car tucked away in a parking ramp at the Megamall. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was at the home Trevino shares with her husband and roommate on Monday evening. Authorities are not commenting on the case.

A West St.Paul man faces first-degree assault charges after his four-month-old daughter suffered skull fractures and eye injuries. The criminal complaint alleges that 26-year-old Michael Mason shook the infant forcefully and bounched her head off his apartment floor last week. Mason initially told police he tripped while carrying his daughter and she struck a baby swing. He later admitted that he was rocking the girl when her head hit the floor "pretty hard" and she was unconscious for 10 to 20 minutes. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of felony assault.

Dakota County law enforcement officers will play in a basketball tournament next month to raise money for the family of Cold Spring Officer Tom Decker. Thirty-one-year-old Decker was shot and killed in the line of duty on November 29th and his murder remains unsolved. The public is encouraged to attend the benefit tournament Saturday March 16th at Apple Valley High School starting at 9 a.m. Admission is free and donations to one of the Tom Decker Memorial Funds are welcome.

Cass County authorities are investigating a two-vehicle crash last night near Walker that sent one person to the hospital and another to jail. Sheriff Tom Burch says a female passenger in one of the cars was ejected and taken to a Fargo hospital. The driver of that vehicle was treated and released at the scene. The 28-year-old Walker man driving the other vehicle was taken into custody pending charges. The cause of crash is still under investigation.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency(MPCA) has issued an air pollution health alert for the Twin Cities metro and Rochester area through midnight. Fine particle pollution has reached a level considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. As wind speeds increase this afternoon, air quality conditions are expected to improve.
