Plum City girls advance to regional semifinals, three other teams eliminated
Plum City will be moving on to the Division 5 semifinals of the WIAA regional girls basketball tournament while three other Pierce County teams were eliminated in Tuesday night's play.

No. 2 seeded PC needed to outscore No. 7 Independence 17-10 in the fourth quarter to put away the Indees, 5-18 overall, by a 49-39 score. Independence only trailed 32-29 going into the fourth quarter. Marah Boyer led the Blue Devils with 17 points while Sarah Gilles had 12 points and Heather Von Holtum nine points to go with a team-leading eight rebounds.
Plum City hosts Cochrane-Fountain City Friday at 7 p.m. in the regional semifinals. The Blue Devils, 11-11 overall, beat the Pirates, 13-10 overall, earlier this season 44-30. No. 3 seeded C-FC just edged No. 6 Gilmanton 46-43 Tuesday.
On the other side of the Division 5 regional bracket No. 5 Elmwood lost to No. 2 Blair-Taylor 53-42 at Blair-Taylor. The Raiders wrap-up their season at 7-16 while the Wildcats, 11-12 overall, will take on No. 1 seed Eleva-Strum, which needed overtime to beat No. 8 Alma/Pepin 73-65.
In Division 4 Spring Valley again improved themselves against Boyceville in their third match-up this season but the end result was the same, a loss. The Bulldogs won the first round contest at home 51-39. Abbie Bird had 17 points for Boyceville, 11-12 overall, while leading Spring Valley, 4-19 overall, was Emily Boisen with 16 points. The Bulldogs had three players in double figures to SV's one. Boyceville will play at Elk Mound Friday.
In Division 3, Ellsworth's season came to a conclusion at 3-19 overall with a 49-21 loss at Durand. The home team only led 16-13 at halftime but Durand won the second half by a margin of 33-9. EHS was badly outshot at the free-throw line by a 16-5 tally. Morganne Gruber had 13 points to lead Durand while Lexi Harmon finished with nine points. Ellsworth was led by Kelsey Betthauser's seven points while Chelsey Strom finished with four points. Durand plays in the regional semifinal Friday at Arcadia.
