The National Football League has given Johnny Jolly a second chance. Now, the question is whether the Green Bay Packers will do the same.
The league said yesterday it will re-instate the 30-year-old defensive lineman, after he was suspended indefinitely for the last three years for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
The Packers still own Jolly’s rights, but they’re not commenting for now. Jolly spent six months in prison until his release last May, following three arrests in his home area of Houston for possessing the codeine that’s used in a popular local drug. Jolly admitted an addiction – and his agent, Jack Bechta, says he’s optimistic that his client will lead a productive life that can still include football. Jolly will return to Green Bay’s 80-man roster on Monday, but the Packers won’t have to make a decision on his future until March 12th. He’s currently under a one-year deal with a two-and-a-half million dollar tender that was offered in 2010.
Jolly played all of Green Bay’s games in 2008 and ’09 – and he appeared to flourish in his final year when defensive coordinator Dom Capers introduced the Packers’ 3-4 system. Jolly had a sack, an interception, and two fumble recoveries that year. The Packers can use another defensive lineman, since Jerel Worthy could be out for some time after having off-season knee surgery.
