Saturday State Sports Briefs: No deal reached on future of Big East
Wisconsin Sports-- Friday’s meeting of Big East school officials ended with no deal reached on exit fees so Marquette and six other schools could possibly form a new basketball league by next season.
ATLANTA - Friday’s meeting of Big East school officials ended with no deal reached on exit fees so Marquette and six other schools could possibly form a new basketball league by next season.
The seven non-football schools are also wanting to buy the Big East name from the other members. They reportedly have a television deal with Fox which will pay Marquette and the other six a total of three million dollars each year. Reports indicate they are willing to give some of that money to the holdover schools for the right to leave early and retain the Big East name.

Wisconsin men’s basketball forward Ryan Evans is questionable for the Badgers’ home game against Purdue on Sunday. The UW confirmed today that the senior Evans sprained his right knee at practice yesterday. He’s the leading rebounder for the 17th-ranked Badgers, grabbing seven-point-six boards per game. He’s also scoring more than 10 points a night. Freshman Sam Dekker was named as Evans’ replacement. But Dekker told reporters today that he expects Evans to somehow recover enough to play against the Boilermakers.

Four-time Olympian skater Andy Gabel says he had an “inappropriate” relationship with a female speedskater in the 1990s. U.S. Speedskating is said to be investigating claims by Birdie Farrell that she was sexually abused by Gabel in 1997 and 1998. Farrell was interviewed at UW-Milwaukee about her allegations. She was 15 at the time, while Gabel was 33. Gabel declined further comment after reading a statement saying he used poor judgment in a brief and inappropriate relationship. He said it did not include sex, but he knows it was wrong and he is making no excuses. Gabel apologized to Farrell, but didn’t name her. She is training at the Pettit National Ice Center in an attempt to make the 2014 U.S. Olympic team. She made her comments in an interview with radio station WUWM.

The Green Bay Packers are estimated to be around $21-million below the NFL’s new salary cap. The Green Bay Press-Gazette said the cap was set yesterday at close to $124-million per team – and the Packers carried over an extra seven-million in cap space from last season. The newspaper says Green Bay’s payroll for salary cap purposes is around $110-million, including the $10-million that was saved when the team released veteran Charles Woodson a week ago. The Packers will have to spend some of their cap money to give tender offers to restricted free agents – including center Evan Dietrich-Smith and corner Sam Shields. Also, the Pack will need some cash to sign the draft choices they bring in. At the same time, general manager Ted Thompson is looking for as much cap space as possible to sign new deals with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, linebacker Clay Matthews, and nose tackle B.J. Raji.

The Milwaukee Wave will play its final two home games of the regular season this weekend. They’ll host Syracuse tonight and Wichita on Sunday afternoon. Milwaukee is second in the Major Indoor Soccer League at 19-5, one game behind first-place Baltimore with four left. After this weekend, the Wave has two contests at Missouri before the playoffs begin.

It’s another three-game weekend for the Milwaukee Admirals. They hosted American Hockey League Midwest Division leader Grand Rapids last night. The Admirals will then play at Rockford tomorrow night, before hosting Grand Rapids again on Sunday afternoon. The Griffins lead the Midwest with 64 points to 56 for third-place Milwaukee. But Grand Rapids has lost its last three road games by a total of 15 goals. Earlier this week, Milwaukee’s parent NHL team traded Admiral Brian McGrattan to Calgary, in exchange for Antigo native and ex-Badger Joe Piskula. He’s expected to play for Milwaukee this weekend, after getting two goals and eight assists with the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat this season.
