Minnesota's WCHA title hopes take a hit with loss to Denver, women win in playoffs
Minnesota Sports-- The University of Minnesota women's hockey team rolled in to the WCHA playoffs with a 5-0 beatdown of Bemidji State winning game one of a best of three series at Ridder Arena Friday. The men's team, however, may well need the playoffs to win a WCHA title after being shutout by Denver at home Friday.
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's hockey team rolled in to the WCHA playoffs with a 5-0 beatdown of Bemidji State winning game one of a best of three series at Ridder Arena Friday. The men's team, however, may well need the playoffs to win a WCHA title after being shutout by Denver at home Friday.
The Golden Gopher women's team scored four of their goals in the second period. Megan Bozek had two of them and Rachel Bona had a goal and an assist. Winning goalie Noora Raty made 20 saves as the Gophers improve to 35-0-0. The U can clinch the series win today with the face-off at 4:05 p.m at Ridder Arena.
Both of Denver's two goals against the U men came in the third period by Ty Loney and Shawn Ostrow. Loney also had an assist. Winning goalie Juho Olkinuora recorded the first Minnesota shutout in two years with 34 saves. Adam Wilcox made 34 saves for the Gophers. The loss drops the No. 2 ranked Gophers to third place in the WCHA, four points behind St. Cloud State. The series concludes tonight at Mariucci Arena.
