Elmwood hoopsters play for state tourney bid

Elmwood High School's boys' basketball team will play for its first trip to the WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament since 1996 when it faces No. 8 ranked Royall in this afternoon's Division 5 La Crosse Logan Sectional championship game.

Elmwood High School's boys' basketball team will play for its first trip to the WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament since 1996 when it faces No. 8 ranked Royall in this afternoon's Division 5 La Crosse Logan Sectional championship game.

Tip-off for today's game between the two No. 1 seeds in the tournament bracket is at 1 p.m. at Logan High School.

The Panthers are 23-3 overall, champions of the Scenic Bluffs Conference and ranked No. 8 in the Division 5 coaches poll. They topped No. 10 Cassville 61-56 in the sectional semifinals Thursday in Reedsburg.

Royall, which is located in Elroy, has two players averaging in double figures, both of them senior guards. Nate Scheeter is a 6-2, averaging 16.2 points per game while Sam Murphy is a four-year starter averaging 14 points per game. He's also Royall's tallest player at 6-4. Both players also lead the team in rebounding.

"You're going to see a contest where both teams really use their defenses to set up really the whole tone of the game from tempo to offense," Elmwood head coach Chris Segerstrom said.

Murphy and Scheeter do much of the work for the Panthers so a victorious Elmwood will probably need a wide range of contributions from different players in scoring, rebounding and defense. And each time Elmwood has won this season they have gotten such balanced efforts.

The state tournament begins Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Kohl Center with

winner facing either No. 1 ranked, nine-time state champion Randolph, 24-2 overall, or last year's state runner-up Racine Lutheran, 14-12 overall, in the state semifinals.
