MESA, Ariz. - The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Chicago Cubs 4-to-3 yesterday at the Cubs training camp in Mesa, Arizona.

Right-hander Marco Estrada threw four scoreless innings in preparation for the World Baseball Classic which starts this week. Estrada gave up just one hit. Alfredo Figaro earned the save, pitching a scoreless ninth. Carlos Gomez homered for the Crew, and Taylor had a double and a run-scoring single. The Brewers are now 4-6 in exhibition play. They’re off today, and will play the Canadian National Team on Tuesday in Phoenix.

Brewers’ third baseman Aramis Ramirez did not hurt his left knee as badly as originally thought. An MRI yesterday showed no tears in the knee, after he jammed it on Saturday while sliding into second base. Brewers’ starter Yovani Gallardo did not pitch as scheduled yesterday, after he strained his right groin last week. He threw a bullpen session instead and reported no trouble afterward. It’s not known whether Gallardo will pitch an inning against the Canadian team tomorrow, as scheduled. The right-hander is expected to pitch for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. Brewers’ outfielder Ryan Braun left the Brewers yesterday to join Team USA. He’s not 100-percent either, after he bruised his left knee after fouling a ball off it last week.

Matt Kenseth of Cambridge placed seventh yesterday in NASCAR’s Subway Fresh Fit-500 in Phoenix. Paul Menard of Eau Claire was 20th. Travis Kvapil of Janesville finished 29th. Beloit-born Danica Patrick escaped injury after slamming her car hard into a wall on Turn-Four. She completed just 185 of the 317 laps, and placed 39th.

UW-Madison graduate Lauren Silberman only made two kicks yesterday, as she became the first woman to compete at an NFL regional scouting combine in New Jersey. She did not warm up, and neither of her kicks went 20 yards. The 28-year-old Silberman blamed a quadriceps muscle that she injured last week while preparing for her tryout. She was among 37 kickers trying out at a regional scouting session at the New York Jets’ practice facility. Silberman played on a club soccer team at Madison.

The Milwaukee Wave finished its Major Indoor Soccer League regular season yesterday, with an 8-6 home win over Wichita. The Wave ended up in a tie with Baltimore for first place at 21-and-5 – but the Blast won the top playoff seed with a tie-breaker. Milwaukee opens the post-season on Thursday night at Wichita. The two teams will play again in Milwaukee next Sunday.
