MINNEAPOLIS - Two University of Minnesota basketball players have been honored by the Big Ten Conference for helping their respective teams pull off upsets last week.
Minnesota senior men's player Trevor Mbakwe of St. Paul is the league's men's player of the week after helping the Gophers knock of then-top-ranked Indiana last Tuesday, followed by a dominating win over Penn State on Saturday. And, Gopher women's center Micaella Riche is the weekly women's honoree. She helped the Minnesota women upset then-No. 7 Penn State on Thursday, followed by a Sunday victory over Indiana.
Golden Gopher women's basketball star Rachel Banham of Lakeville has been named first-team All-Big Ten by the league's head coaches and second-team All-Big Ten on a vote of the conference's media members. Banham won the regular season scoring title in the Big Ten, averaging 21-points-per game. The sophomore from Lakeville North High School was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year a season ago.
