PLUM CITY - Getting to the state tournament isn't supposed to be easy and it certainly won't be for the Plum City High School girls basketball team as they face a formidable opponent in the WIAA Division 5 La Crosse Logan Sectional semifinals.
The Blue Devils have the task of taking on the state's No. 2 ranked squad in Division 5, 24-1 Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, Thursday night in Neillsville with the tip-off at 7 p.m.
The Royals are led by a tall pair of freshmen forwards in 6-1 Gina Grundhoffer and 6-0 Olivia Skibba. Assumption's leading scorer is 5-9 junior guard Mary Sigler, averaging 16 points per game. Grundhoffer averages 11.2 points per game. Eight out of the nine players on the Assumption roster are 5-6 or bigger. WRA had no problems winning the Marawood Conference South Division this season. Their only loss came in conference play 67-55 to Wausau Newman.
If Plum City, 13-11 overall, can pull off the upset, they'll face either No. 8 ranked Seneca, 23-2 overall, or Brookwood, 19-6, who are playing in the other semifinal down in Richland Center. The winners will meet in a 7 p.m. contest at La Crosse Logan High School Saturday for the championship.
