Twelve top math students from Ellsworth High School competed in the Eau Claire Math Competition Feb. 16.
There were two teams of six students each. The top scorers this year for Ellsworth were Lucas Green, Ben Moldenhauer and Dan Giese with 15 points each; they tied for eighth place overall as individuals.
Eric McGregor followed with 13 points, who tied for 11th place.
The top EHS team earned 100 points, which was fourth out of 14 teams in Division II. West Salem (114), Viroqua (109) and Aquinas (101) took first through third. The local second team was not far behind with 81 points, taking sixth place overall, the highest ever the EHS second team has accomplished.
In the competition, students take four 15-minute individual tests in algebra, geometry, advanced algebra and advanced math, followed by one 20-minute group test. It was truly a team effort this year.
Congratulations to all of the participants who dedicated a Saturday to do math: Kelsey Betthauser, Darby DeGross, Michaela DeGross, Mason Engnes, Dan Giese, Lucas Green, Jason Grubish, Isaac Hines, Becky Matzek, Eric McGregor, Ben Moldenhauer and Austin Wilcox.
