PC girls give sectional semifinal a good effort
Plum City High School's girls' basketball team didn't let Wisconsin Rapids Assumption's No. 2 state ranking or 25-1 state ranking intimidate them in the semifinals of the WIAA Division 5 La Crosse Logan Sectional tournament Thursday.
NEILSVILLE - Plum City High School's girls' basketball team didn't let Wisconsin Rapids Assumption's No. 2 state ranking or 25-1 record intimidate them in the semifinals of the WIAA Division 5 La Crosse Logan Sectional tournament Thursday.
The Blue Devils only trailed 16-13 after the first quarter against the Royals. In fact, for three out of the fourth quarters the game was pretty even.
But it was in the second quarter where the Royals took control of the game and held through the second half for a 65-50 win. The Devils wind up the season at 13-12 overall.
Assumption's 5-9 guard Mary Sigler led all scorers with 24 points and WRA also got 10 points from 6-1 freshman center Gena Grundhoffer. The Royals outscored PC 21-11 in the second quarter for a 37-24 halftime lead.
Plum City had three players in double figures led by freshman Cheyeanne Catura with 16 points. She made 10-of-13 free throws. Juniors Sarah Gilles and Elaina Danzinger both scored 11 points. Senior Heather Von Holtum finished with 14 rebounds and Gilles had three assists.
