Champs crowned in boys' state prep hoops tourney

MADISON - Undefeated Gemantown blitzed Mukwonago 57-28 while claiming its second straight Division 1 state title at the 98th WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday at the Kohl Center.

Senior Luke Fischer hit 8-of-10 floor shots, scored 17 points and took down eight rebounds in the championship showdown. He was named the tournament MVP/ Mukwonago was held to 21 percent shooting by the Warhawks defense. Dominic Cizauskas led the Indians with nine points. Fischer, who will play his college ball at Indiana, was also won the state's Mr. Basketball award as the state's top player.

Pulaski shot more than 61 percent from the floor while holding off Wisconsin Lutheran 48-40 to win the WIAA Division 2 state title. Thirty of the Red Raiders’ points were scored in the paint, including the first 11 buckets of the game. Senior Cody Wichmann, a UW-Milwaukee recruit, led the way with 17 points for the winners. Wisconsin Lutheran got a game-high 19 from Deiondre Cunningham. This is the first-ever state championship for Pulaski in three tries at state.

La Crosse Aquinas failed to hit a field goal for the last four minutes of the WIAA Division 3 title game, but it was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. That helped cement a 53-48 victory over Lodi. University of Wisconsin recruit Bronson Koenig scored 16 points to lead the Blugolds to their second state championship in three seasons. Lodi tried to rally by scoring a dozen straight points in the fourth quarter, but perfect results at the charity stripe kept Aquinas on top. Kris Seffrood led Lodi with 19 points.

Senior Duane Wilson scored 26 points and handed out seven assists as Whitefish Bay Dominican took the WIAA Division 4 state title game 57-44 over Auburndale. The Marquette-bound Wilson scored all 14 of his team’s points in the fourth quarter. Diamond Stone, considered one of the best sophomore basketball players in the U.S., added 22 points and 16 rebounds as the Knights won a second straight state championship. Auburndale senior Austin Hawkins scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the defeat.

Randolph won its 10th state title in the last 18 seasons by using a stifling defense to shut down Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran 48-42. No other Wisconsin high school has won more championships in boys' basketball. Lutheran held a 42-41 lead with 3:44 to go, but Randolph scored the last seven points of the WIAA Division 5 state title game. The Blazers had come in undefeated, but suffered their first loss despite 14 points by Travis Voigt. Junior Kyle Roberts led the Rockets with 13 and scored to eventual winning points on a jumper with 2:48 left
