SPRING VALLEY--Although last month's inaccurate report indicated the vacant Spring Valley Health Care Center facility would be demolished, there were no appearances during the time set aside by the Spring Valley Village Board early this month for the public to discuss the matter.

However, the potential buyer, Gene Zenz, the man interested in developing the building as a health care center for veterans, addressed the board.

“We've already incurred substantial expenses in research and legal fees,” said Zenz, who lives in Seattle.

He suggested uncertainty about his intentions were understandable, as his purchase is dependent on the sale of another property in Minnesota. Appearing with Zenz was Spring Valley resident Dave Jones, who will be managing the property.

Zenz said the mold clean-up and abatement estimate is about $35,000, and the work has been scheduled with the contractors. He is asking the village to continue spring maintenance like mowing and building security.

Zenz is a Viet Nam veteran who is talking to the Wounded Warrior project about creating a place for vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. His own experience with drug and alcohol addiction is what motivates him and he shared his three decades of sobriety are proof veterans suffering from psychological disorders like PTSD can be treated.
