Brewers bullpen blows 3-run lead

The Milwaukee Brewers blew a three-run lead in the final three innings and lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Eric Gagne was rested after going three innings the previous two nights and it was Guillermo Mota’s turn to blow a save.

He took a one-run lead into the ninth before giving up three. Juan Pierre hit the game-winner for Los Angeles, a two-run double.

Brewers’ reliever David Riske left in the eighth inning with a hyper-extended elbow. He’ll be examined today (Thursday) to determine the damage.

Pierre went 3-5 on the night with three RBI’s and a run scored. Blake DeWitt homered, as the Dodgers ended a five-game losing streak.

The Brewers were held to six hits, none for extra bases.

Starter Manny Parra hit a two-run single, and had his longest outing of the year, six-and-two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

Mota took the loss to go 1-2.

Jonathan Broxton got the win in relief. Takashi Saito earned his sixth save with a perfect ninth inning.

The Brewers ended a three-game winning streak and returned to .500 at 20-20.

They’ll close out their series with the Dodgers this (Thursday) afternoon. Right-hander Ben Sheets goes for Milwaukee against right-hander Chad Billingsley.

Owner OKs another starter

Owner Mark Attanasio says the Brewers can buy another starter if they need one.

The No. 2 starter Yovani Gallardo is most likely out for the year after having surgery Tuesday to fix a torn ACL knee ligament.

Attanasio says the Brewers’ $82 million payroll is flexible enough for General Manager Doug Melvin to get another starter, if one’s available for the right price in a trade.

The owner admits it’s a big if, because no team is willing to give up on a starter this early in the season.

Attanasio also says there’s been no progress in negotiating long-term contracts with first baseman Prince Fielder and outfielder Ryan Braun, but he says the Brewers are far from giving up on that.
