Investigation finds Eau Galle shooting was justified

The shooting of a town of Eau Galle man in a standoff with sheriff’s deputies last month was justified two separate investigations have determined.

House fire victim identified

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s department has identified the victim in a rural Somerset house fire late Friday. Thomas H. Cook, 70, was found dead in his house at 2107 County Rd. I. A deputy was dispatched at 11:59 p.m., Oct. 5.

Board rejects closing county nursing home at New Richmond

The St. Croix County Board of Supervisors rejected a move to close its nursing home facility in New Richmond and passed a resolution to build a new one in a marathon meeting Tuesday. Supervisors Daryl Standafer, Tim Hood, Fred Yoerg, Buck Malick, Chris Kilber, Richard Ottino and Tom Hawksford voted to close the facility but the resolution passed by a 12-7 margin.

High time to settle the NFL officials’ strike

It was going to happen sooner or later. Too bad it cost the Green Bay Packers on a national stage. The situation is the NFL’s use of replacement officials while the regular referees are locked out during contract negotiations.

More information on man fatally shot in deputy standoff

A town of Eau Galle man was killed Saturday evening in a standoff with sheriff’s deputies. Patrick McDonnell, 51, was fatally wounded after he shot at least twice at law officers and they returned fire at 9:09 p.m. Sept. 22, said St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts.

Judge rules defense may keep evidentiary materials in Schaffhausen case

The defense will be able to retain copies of specific sensitive materials in the Aaron Schaffhausen murder case following a hearing Thursday afternoon. Judge Howard W. Cameron was asked to issue a protective order on the data by state prosecutor Gary Freybeg.

Martell’s last grape harvest

The 2012 harvest at Martell Vineyards last weekend was a bittersweet event. Not only did a harsh growing year with a spring frost wipe out the La Crescent grapes and reduce the total harvest to about half last year’s 37-ton production, but also owner Tom Martell, who established the five acres of grapes outside Somerset, died just five weeks before the harvest.

UPDATED: Escapee recaptured near Exit 4, Saturday afternoon

St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts said an inmate with previous sex assault convictions who walked away from a work release program Friday afternoon was recaptured without incident just after noon, Saturday.
