Leadership group cultivates literacy

The 12-member Chamber of Commerce-sponsored group Leadership River Falls got busy Thursday, May 16, building for its civic-service project and installing River Falls’ third Little Free Library at the Eco Village being developed by the St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity.

An honor celebration held May 15 at Kinnic Health and Rehab spotlighted the service of seven veterans living there. Each received a certificate of appreciation and a lapel pin that says: “A grateful nation thanks you, USA veteran.”

River Falls resident and 21-year military veteran Bret VanBlaircom visited the April 23 City Council meeting to offer thanks to the city for signing a statement of support for troops and give information about his new role in the community. People may see him around town, paying visits to businesses and other types of employers.

Local man continues crib-recycling work

Longtime River Falls resident Dana Pruitt introduced a new non-profit concept last spring in which he collects used baby items to recycle, refurbish and/or rebuild then donate to places that need them, such as the local emergency shelter Our Neighbors’ Place and the local domestic abuse shelter Turningpoint.

Bike riding shifts into high gear with season, status, sporty challenge

About 50 wheeled riders in the group WeBike pedaled off together from Veterans Park around 6 p.m. the night of Friday, April 26, for the first community bike ride of the season. Together, the leisure riders follow one of several four-to-five-mile routes.
