Lois Ann "Schmoo" Johnson, age 81, of Ellsworth, Wis., passed away on Aug. 31, 2011, after battling many illnesses for over 10 years.

Schmoo was born on July 11, 1930, in Popple Creek, Minn. She was the daughter of Fred and Anna (Leyk) Mendel, the youngest of six children. Schmoo grew up and attended school in Popple Creek.

She went on to graduate from St. John's Hospital School of Nursing in Red Wing, Minn., in 1951. That is where she met and married Eugene “Doc” Jonas; they were married in 1953 and later divorced in 1965. They had one son together, Bill Jonas. Schmoo married Gordy Johnson on Dec. 10, 1966, in Red Wing. They had two children together, Ann and Mike.

Schmoo was an outgoing lady with a lot of energy in her little body. She was full of smiles, love, and hugs for everybody she met. Schmoo loved baking, crafts, reading, camping, and playing UNO. Most of all she loved seeing her family in Ellsworth and St. Cloud, Minn. Schmoo was known for her fabulous care of others, as well as keeping nurses sharp and on their toes, those working with her in her nursing career and those who cared for her.

Schmoo is survived by her husband of 44 years, Gordy; three children, William (Kathy Martino) Jonas of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Ann Rustad of Nelson, Wis., and Michael (Kim) Johnson of Ellsworth; four grandchildren, Karen (Hernandez) Wine, Emily Jonas, Peter Jonas, and Adam Johnson; two siblings, Irene Perske of St. Cloud and Merrill (Lorraine) Mendel of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepdaughter, Michelle (Johnson) Hernandez, and son-in-law, Ki Hernandez; three brothers, Allen, Art, and Donald Mendel.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at the Hill Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. Rev. Mary Eide will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

I never had the chance to know Schmoo while she was a nurse, but she taught me some tips on flower corsage making when she worked in the flower shop that was in East Ellsworth. These flower making tips helped me get to State in forensics when I was in high school (Ellsworth). Schmoo will be missed. God's peace to her family. Holly (Butler) Girdeen
