Loraine Steffen, 94

Loraine Mary Steffen, age 94, was born on July 19, 1917, on a farm near Oyens, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Cecilia Frances (Arens) Gengler. She died peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Ellsworth Care Center.

At an early age, she moved with her family to the small town of Oyens. She attended school at St. Catherine's. Loraine moved with her parents near Cavour, S.D., in 1930. She attended rural school and moved to Elkton, S.D., in 1933. Loraine met Robert Marcus Steffen in Elkton and was untied in marriage on June 18, 1939. Together they had four children: Carl Robert, Mary Ann, Sandra Catherine, and Donald Michael. Loraine and Bob lived in the following places in Minnesota: Pipestone, Slayton, Mankato, Garfield, Alexandria, and Little Falls. In 1957, they moved to Ellsworth, and in 1959, bought the Ellsworth Recreation Bowling Alley. They moved to Stewartville, Minn., in August 1964, and then back to Slayton in 1967 to buy Broadway Bowl. They retired out of the bowling alley in 1971. They traveled many lakes of Minnesota and spent the winters in California on the Foresthill Ranch. Bob died on Aug. 31, 1976. After his death, Loraine spent time at Foresthill Ranch and Slayton. The Foresthill Ranch was sold in 1990, and Loraine moved to Bone Lake in the spring of 1991 and has remained in the Hager City-Ellsworth area.

She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth. She loved to bowl, fish, camp, play pinochle, bingo, cooking, and watching bowling, baseball and football, especially the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Loraine is survived by three sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Irvine, Calif., Mary Kathryn Adams of San Leandro, Calif., and Rose Marie McTague of Aberdeen, S.D.; son-in-law Joe Jorgenson and daughter-in-law Kathy Steffen; 14 grandchildren, Brad Hase, Brian (Becky) Hase, Mark Hase, Julie (Randy) Brickner, Robert (Joanie) Heacox, Mary Jo (LeAllan) Huppert, Shari (Ryan) Schnell, Jodi (Dave) Knight, Michelle (Nate) Landers, Michael (Amy) Steffen, Ann (Norb) Feist, Lori (Ryan) Elsen, Robert Strusz and Bill Steffen; 22 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Brady, Branden, and Bridgette Hase, Brianne and Jacob Brickner, Emmarie and Alec Heacox, Adam, Nicholas, and William Huppert, Kayla and Tanner Christopherson, Erica Konkol, Katie Holliday, Lemoine, Hayley, and David Steffen, Abby and Emma Feist, Caden and Taylor Elsen; one great-great-granddaughter, Bailey Evenson; many nieces, nephews and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and children, Carl Robert Steffen, Mary Ann Strusz, Sandra Jorgenson, and Donald Steffen; grandson Robert Marcus; two sisters, Margaret and Lucille; and three brothers, Arnold, Milton, and Francis.

Pallbearers are Brad, Brian, and Mark Hase, Robert Heacox, Michael and Bill Steffen, Robert C. Strusz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth. Burial will be in the Burnside Cemetery, Red Wing, Minn. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m.
