Myrtle L. Olson, age 97, passed away Monday, Jan. 23, at Grace Woodlands Home in Eau Claire, Wis.

She was born June 22, 1914, in Ellsworth, Wis., to Fremont and Clara Maynard in the farmhouse homesteaded by the Maynard family. She lived there until she graduated from Ellsworth High School. She then moved to St. Paul where she trained and worked as a beautician for the next 2 years. After returning to Ellsworth, she married Arnold C. Olson and worked as a part-time beautician and housekeeper. Her son, Roy, was born in 1943. For several years following her divorce, she worked as a live-in housekeeper and caretaker for different families in Ellsworth and Durand.

She returned to the farm where she grew up in 1956 to care for her parents. Later, when she moved into an apartment in town, she always enjoyed the many activities at the Ellsworth Senior Citizens Center, playing cards regularly and doing her many handwork and craft projects. Each year she eagerly awaited the Pierce County Fair where she could see and visit with many old friends and where she usually won a few prize ribbons for baked goods and sewing. She truly looked forward to the time spent with her three granddaughters and later her great-grandchildren, especially after moving to Eau Claire in 2005.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ralph and Bob Maynard; and one sister, Grace Culp.

She is survived by her son, Roy (Kathy) Olson; three granddaughters, Michelle Olson, Denise Olson (Pete Seymour), and Leslie (Phil) Richard; eight great-grandchildren, Sam Husby, Jordan Olson, Meegan, Grace, and Griffin Kristo, Connor Janu, Taryn, and Boden Richard, one nephew, Rob (Denise) Maynard; and four grand-nieces and –nephews, Amber, Summer, Eric, Justin Maynard.

Graveside services will be held at Thurston Hill Cemetery, Ellsworth, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Grace Lutheran Foundation, Eau Claire, who provided such excellent care for her while she live in Eau Claire.
