Donald E. Nelson, age 96, of Red Wing, died Sunday, May 13, at St. Brigid at Hi-Park, Red Wing.

Donald E. Nelson, age 96, of Red Wing, died Sunday, May 13, at St. Brigid at Hi-Park, Red Wing, Minn.

Don was born May 3, 1916, in Diamond Bluff, Wis., the son of Andrew and Effie R. (Porter) Nelson. He was a graduate of River Falls High School. Don married Phyllis Baird in 1940.

While raising his family and dairy farming, he worked many years at Red Wing Pottery. He retired in 1982 from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls and continued farming with his son.

Don's lifelong love for his wife of almost 72 years was evidenced even during the last days of his life. He frequently shared that meeting her was one of the best days of his life. He enjoyed many types of music, but was passionate about Southern Gospel quartets and shared that appreciation with all who knew him.

Don was a member of First Covenant Church, Red Wing.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Red Wing, and children Ronald (Deborah) Nelson, Bay City; Royce (Ruby) Nelson, Elmwood; Renee Hedstrom, Prairie Farm; Roxine (Gail) Johnson, Ellsworth; Redina (Robert) Bang, Ellsworth; Rebecca (Donald) Van Loon, Red Wing; and Richard (Wanda) Nelson, Bay City; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Alice Hodgman, Ft. Worth, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Ranelle; grandson Cary Nelson; great-grandson Dylan Knutson; sister Ruth Cernohous; daughter-in-law Beverly Nelson; and son-in-law Paul Hedstrom.

Funeral services for Don will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at First Covenant Church, Red Wing, with Pastor Tim Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Diamond Bluff Cemetery, Diamond Bluff. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hill Funeral Home, Ellsworth, and for 1 hour prior to the funeral at the church on Thursday.

Memorials preferred to First Covenant Church or donor's choice.

Pallbearers will be Don's grandsons: DeWayne Nelson, Tim Hedstrom, Keith Johnson, Chris Bang, Dan Johnson, and Cody Madsen.
