Eugene "Gene" F. Hopkins, 90, of Union Grove, Wis., passed away on June 12 at his residence.

Eugene "Gene" F. Hopkins, 90, of Union Grove, Wis., passed away on June 12 at his residence.

He was born May 6, 1922, to Eugene C. and Helen (nee Kirkpatrick) Hopkins in Aurora, Ill. Gene married Marion Tui Stevenson on Sept. 26, 1947, and during their 52 years together they raised two children.

Gene was proud to have served his country as a Marine during WWII. His duties as a “Frogman” in Japan saved thousands of lives and earned him the Medal of Honor. After the war, Gene worked as a salesman, farmer, banker, real estate appraiser and broker. He was a member of the VFW and the Union Grove Masons Lodge #288.

Gene is survived by his son, Peter (Diane Phillis) Hopkins; his grandchildren, Eric (Dianne) Hopkins and Joel (Sa) Hopkins; his great-grandchildren, Isabella Rose Hopkins, Noah Frederick Hopkins, and Andrew Eugene Hopkins; his sister Nancy (Bill) Bierbaum; and many other family and friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Tui, on July 26, 1999; his daughter, Martha Hopkins Deibert, on Sept. 5, 1998; his parents; and his sister Janet Hansen.

Gene's family and friends may gather for visitation at the Union Grove Methodist Church from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, June 30. A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Milagros Bermudez, which will include Masonic prayers, will begin at 2 p.m. Full military honors will immediately follow.

A second funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at the Ono United Methodist Church (at the corner of US 10 and CTH C, West of Plum City, between Durand and Ellsworth) in Pierce County, Wis. Burial will follow this second service at Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire.

very sorry for your loss !! also think that you should know that your father,uncle,friend or whatever be the case did NOT get awarded the medal of honor and also was not a frogman in wwII just so everyone is aware these things are very easy to look up the cmh is very distinctive and very hard to come by yet alot of people lie about this reward and it makes me ill living or not !!!
