Marion Anderson, 101, of Ellsworth, died Friday, July 6, at the Ellsworth Care Center, Ellsworth, Wis.
Marion was born on Dec. 9, 1910, on a farm in Ellsworth Township, to Chester and Clara (Gotzman) Krauss. She was the oldest of four children.
Marion was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. As a child she walked two miles to the Frier School and later walked three miles daily to Ellsworth High School, where she graduated from as valedictorian in 1928. After graduating, she attended nursing school at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Paul, graduating with an RN degree in 1932. Marion continued to work at St. Luke's until returning to Ellsworth. On May 4, 1936, Marion married Everett Anderson. They lived and farmed in the town of Ellsworth until building a home on Beulah St. in Ellsworth, across from Zion Covenant Church. During Marion's years on the farm, she enjoyed being outdoors and working with the cattle and chickens.
She was an active member of the Zion Covenant Church, teaching Sunday school for many years. She was also an active member of the Ellsworth Homemakers Club. Marion was known as an excellent cook, especially for her wonderful bread and doughnuts she called fried cakes, and her sweet rolls. Upon moving to Ellsworth, she continued her activities at Zion and started cooking and baking at Strom's Friendship Home (Brotoloc), where she worked for many years.
Never having children of her own, she loved the residents at the Friendship Home like family. Marion was a great family person, loving her nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors' children like her own. She made everyone feel special.
Marion became a widow in 1997 and continued living alone in her home until January of 2004 when she moved to the Ellsworth Care Center. Her only living sister, Charlotte Krause, age 99, joined her there in 2010. They saw each other on a daily basis.
Marion attributed her longevity to a loving family, strong faith, hard work and good food.
Marion is survived by her sister Charlotte Krause, Ellsworth; nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett; her parents; brother, George; and sister Claribel Fels.
Funeral services for Marion will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Zion Covenant Church, Ellsworth. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be for 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
