Phyllis Ruby Nelson, age 92, of Red Wing, Minn., died Wednesday, Sept. 26, at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park, Red Wing.

Phyllis was born on Jan. 21, 1920, in Deer River, Minn., the daughter of Ralph and Catherine (Heinrichs) Baird.

Phyllis graduated from Staples High School and attended St. Cloud Normal School. She married Donald Nelson in 1940, putting her teaching career on hold to raise her seven children. After her youngest child entered school, she attended River Falls College, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1963.

Phyllis taught school in Vasa, Minn.; St. Croix Falls, Wis.; Downing, Wis.; and ended her teaching career at Lindgren Elementary School in the Ellsworth School District. Teaching school was one of her greatest pleasures, and she especially appreciated watching her students reach their full potential.

Phyllis had many interests, but her passions were her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed Bible study with special friends, gardening, and oil painting. She also loved the challenge of cryptograms and crossword puzzles.

She was a member of First Covenant Church, Red Wing.

She is further survived by 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and her brother Duane Baird of Pendleton, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; daughter Ranelle; grandson Cary Nelson; great-grandson Dylan Knutson; daughter-in-law Beverly Nelson; son-in-law Paul Hedstrom; her sisters, Fern Bain, Nora Davis, and Doris Springer; and her brothers Howard and Claude Baird.
