Mary Elizabeth Dougherty, age 89, of Prescott, died Monday, Oct. 8, at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park, Red Wing, Minn.

Mary was born in Plum City, Wis., on Aug. 14, 1923, the daughter William and Nellie Lonlien (Larson) Evans. She grew up in Bay City and went to grade school through the 10th grade in Bay City. Mary graduated from Ellsworth High School on May 8, 1942.

Prior to marriage, Mary had more important things to do, such as see the world! Mary went out to San Diego where she took a job as a "Rosie the Riveter." She eventually went to work in the office.

Mary met her future husband, James F. Dougherty, at a dance at Hortenbach's Ballroom in Bay City. They were married on June 12, 1943, while he was on shore leave from the South Pacific, in San Diego. When Jim returned to the South Pacific, Mary went to Connecticut to work for the U.S. government in a highly secretive position, where they were building the first atomic submarines. Following the war, Mary and Jim moved back to the Midwest for a bit and started their family, but due to the busy military life, they moved frequently throughout the states. Mary absolutely loved moving around. It gave her the opportunity to experience different lifestyles. Finally, when Jim was stationed at Fort Snelling, the family settled in Bay City, where they remained until 1970, at which time they moved to Prescott, where Mary resided until 2012.

While living at Bay City and Prescott, Mary always worked at various jobs, office management, waitressing, selling Avon, banking, even night security work for a while. She loved to stay busy, and especially she loved the outdoors, wildlife, and planting flowers.

She was always very concerned about all of her beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They always brought a smile to her face.

Mary was a member of the Pierce County Historical Society and the Costello-Madsen American Legion Post Auxiliary, Prescott.

She is survived by children, Richard (Normita )Dougherty Sr., Patricia (Dennis) Truttman, Katherine (Scott) Erickson, Susan (Dan) Brunkhorst; grandchildren Barry Dougherty, Becky Konze, Richard Dougherty Jr., Christopher Dougherty, Daniel Truttman, Angie Langer, Mike Truttman, Josh Most, Gabe Most, Mandy Cudd, and Jacob Brunkhorst; 20 great-grandchildren.
